Any hairdressers out there?

I was born with black hair (father was from Middle East). As the greys started to emerge I coloured it the same colour ie black.

However, now I feel it's too harsh and would dearly like to go for a slightly lighter colour, maybe dark brown.

I had it stripped and coloured at a hairdressers a few years ago and it was not a great success, which puts me off going back.

It went a coppery brown and the texture became quite wirey (I usually have glossy hair). So did not keep it like that for long. Hairdresser put the texture down to my hair ageing and the copper down to it being that the hair was black. Would my hair always go copper if dyed?

The other major factor with my hair is that it grows so, so quickly. I need to do my roots every 10 days. So going to have them done at the salon was costing me a small fortune. Therefore I need to be able to do my roots at home.

I do them at home with Nice and Easy (ash brown but still comes out as almost black on my hair).

I would like to lighten the colour (at a salon?) and then do the roots myself. But am scared it will go coppery/coarse again. And how would I be able to match the salon product to do my roots?

Are there any hairdressers out there who can help?
