What are late-30s women wearing in the UK now?

Been living in the US for the last few years, the last year in the fashion desert that is a small town in the Midwest, but if all goes to plan and DH gets his visa, we'll be moving back home in a couple of months!

The standard SAHM uniform here is fleece hoodie over brewery t-shirt over yoga pants with white running shoes, so I've let things slip a bit. I want to try and look a bit more stylish for moving back to the UK, but I've no clue what people are actually wearing nowadays. Does everyone really dress like that School Gate blog or the Bum Look 40 woman - is it still all skinny jeans and stripy tops?

I am almost 39, my usual uniform is
skinny jeans, t shirt and jacket if am out. I also like wearing tube skirts or midi skirts. Am trying to be more stylish as my teenage daughters are complaining

My opinion is wear what you are happy in. I am not in my late 30's but 46. I wear leggings, jeans, short skirts, A-line skirts. Tbh, i dont think people generally care what you wear. If i want to be smart, i put on a denim skirt and a top with my ankle boots. If i am having 'i dont give a shit day' i wear my bootleg jeans, top, cardi and a pair of clarks originals on my feet. I also from time to time vary it with a tunic and leggings and boots. If you want to have that edge, wear some jewellery. A nice pair of earring or necklace that coordinates with your clothes makes you look like you have made more of an effort!!! I have people say that i look glamarous but i dont quite ever feel that way!!! I just care about what clothes i buy and wear..mostly from white stuff!!!

I'm 40. At the mo I wear either Next relaxed skinnies or tapered rolled-up chinos. Have been wearing these with a long vest underneath and a boxy top/jumper.

On hot days I usually wear vest maxis or a maxi skirt + skinny t-shirt.

Skinny jeans and stripey tops definitely still very popular!

There are also a LOT of maxi dresses around as soon as the sun comes out, with sparkly flat sandals and cropped denim jackets. Skater-style dresses over tights or leggings. Printed harem trousers or patterned wide-leg trousers are in all the shops for summer, as are boyfriend jeans (ie., what used to just be normal jeans - the kind of jeans you wore in the 90s if you didn't want to wear bootcut). Bird prints are still everywhere, and there's an inordinate amount of clothing around with squirrels, owls, foxes etc, but I've never actually seen anyone wearing them (thank God). Long jersey skirts are popular for summer.

You never really see yoga pants over here (other than at yoga classes), although there hoodies are everywhere in school runs and the like.

Quite a lot. But ditch the stripe and go for plain.

I'm late 30s. Outside work I tend to go for skinnies and tops with converse/ballet pulps/sandals (boots in winter). In the winter I also wear jumper dresses with leggings and boots. I also have a maxi tube skirt for weekend wear.

I have skirts and shorts for the really warm 2 days weather.

As long as you don't wear leggings as trousers, you will be fine! Think of leggings in the same way as tights, to be worn under tops, dresses & skirts so at no point should your arse be in view to the unsuspecting public.

For weekends my staple is skinny jeans, loafers or converse or shoe boots and tight vest top With jersey blazer or cropped cardigan

This is a bit of a relief - I'm fairly sure I can manage that kind of outfit (and I'm still a fan of skinny jeans!)

MsAsprey, there are no circumstances in which I would expose my leggings-clad arse to the world. Not even if I were wearing them as pyjamas and my duvet caught fire.
