Yippe,I haven't been able to get as far down to the style section for days, don't know why,but since I decided since discovering it that I like it as much as the arts and crafts section or maybe even a bit more it's been V frustrating.Anyway,I was wondering what all your views are on asking complete strangers where they got the clothes they are wearing?Or don't you even look to see if people are stylish etc?I always notice if someone is wearing something nice and I think it would suit metoo.I feel like asking them where they bought it.What do you think?Or are you a complete style snob and couldn't possibly wear something if someone else has it?Just thought I'd put that Q in for a bit of fun. What I really want to know is
a,would you be offended if someone stopped you in the street to ask where they got that, for example, top from?
or
b, be flattered and tell them?
or
c,be flattered but say you couldn't possibly tell where?

I'd be flattered and tell someone, not that anyone has ever asked me.But my sister who is super stylish and trendy said she has indeed had people, strangers stop her in the street a few times to ask her where she got her shoes etc from.I haven't asked anybody else so I'm dying to know what you lot would do or if you've ever felt like asking someone.Cos I have but I'm always too chicken to ask.

Really?Yes I thought most peeps would be flattered,I would.I've never had a problem with people copying me but I know some people don't like it.
I saw a woman with some perfect jeans on,a bit different with some white embroidery along the bottom. It looked really lovely and I was dying to ask her where they were from. But I didn't,shame, then I thought why couldn't I just embroider along the bottom of my jeans like that!So I will.

would never ask a stranger (because I'm too shy), and rarely ask friends - instead I say 'ooh I like your top' and they either say 'oh this old thing, I've had it for years' or 'it was only £3 in Primark!'

I don't think I've ever bought an exact item because I've seen someone else in it though, just have a general awareness that someone looked nice in eg a fitted jacket, cool trainers etc and I should think about getting something similar.

in the laughably unlikely event of a stranger asking me where I got my clothes, I would be flattered and tell them (after I'd picked myself up off the floor).

I've sometimes wanted to ask strangers but been too shy.

I do ask friends, conversationally and to get ideas for which shops to try, but I'd never go out and buy the same thing.

Mmm a colleague of mine asked where i got my cardy from and I had to admit it was Boden! the shame . She was shocked!

layla · 25/08/2006 18:26

No,but why was she shocked though?I think they do pretty nice cardi's but find their tops a bit short in the body.
I think I will ask people from now on,seeing as none of you would be rude back.I saw a green poncho on this older woman the other day so I followed her round the supermarket for a couple of isles thinking I'll just ask her in a minute where she got it from. Then no I just chickenned out.So I'll never know. But sometimes you just see something and think,I've just got to have it.
You know sometimes when you pass people in the street and you can see them giving you the up and down once over on what you're wearing so I know others do it.I'd be so shocked too if anyone did ask me.

Good question! I'm loving this thread!
So I have asked people/been asked and also regretted not asking people at a later date. Ie
I do think it depends where you are and whether there are loads of other people around.
But then I'm the kind of person who will chase up an escalator to politely tap somone on the shoulder to check if they know they've got a ladder in their tights. could be on the way to a job interview-and I would rather know!

crunchie · 25/08/2006 19:39

I have been asked, snug i must be super stylish

I have never actually asked as tbh I have never seen much I admire!!

Seriously it is flattering to be asked, I have asked friends, but not strangers. I would defineatly ask though if I liked something
