How often do you colour your hair?

The last time I coloured my hair (I do it at home myself) was 3 weeks ago. No matter which brand I use, and it's a permanent colour, it always seems to fade, so at around this time, it looks as though it needs to be re-done.

The last colourant I used was a permanent brown Poly Colour Tint by Shwarzkopf. I was really happy with the result, which seemed to last. However, as time has gone on, I can see it has faded somewhat (I know most dyes do) so most if the richness & depth has gone.

But this is a permanent colour, surely they should have some staying power?! I know my hair isn't in the best condition, it's dry & seen better days but it should still take colour?

I choose natural or light browns, I don't go for medium or dark browns as I know from experience they can result in near blacks - and it would be just my luck if that i use a darker colour & it won't fade! I usually apply the colour to the roots first & leave that in for a bit then take it through the lengths.

So can I be colouring my hair every 3-4 weeks?

The best results I have had have been by using a professional dye-Majirel.

I use Jerome Russell 30 vol ( not 40 as that should only be used for highlights) 75ml bottle of cream peroxide ( no powder just the cream) and mix it with a tube of Majirel (50ml). It stays put and is better than what is on the high street as the developers in the perm colours are too weak to penetrate my grey.

I still have to do my very obvious roots every couple of weeks but have left it longer now and am tempted to go the chiffon headscarf route this summer and grit my teeth through the regrowth. I know it will take three months and that isn't long but it is tough to resist just bunging on a dye when it's a month in and you are looking bald in patches because of the white emerging. Grin

You see my natural colour is auburn, if I go too dark, when my roots come through they really are noticeable & there was a period last year where no matter what dye I put on them, nothing took to my roots, so that's when I had a brainstorm of going lighter all over & tried to revert back to my natural colour, but I wrecked my hair in the process. I went too far & ended up quite light, I do not suit any shade of blonde whatsoever and oddly enough I don't really suit my natural colour, although its not quite as auburn as it was when I was younger.

I suppose I could try getting hold if the colours they use in hairdressers, but I'm not that confident I would get the right formula - I'd probably just balls it up!

I've given myself 6 weeks until I can colour again so that'll be 10 weeks in all - be like a record for me, but I need to improve my hairs condition & I so want to grow the 3.5 inches or whatever I've had to chop off!

Your natural hair should suit you - maybe your make-up is adjusted to fit the dyed colour and that's why your natural colouring seems off.

I have dark hair with serious white coming through now, so I get a white parting after about 2 weeks, kind of like a skunk. I tend to string it out and then do a home permanent dye at 3 weeks.

I use Colour & Care as it seems to do the least damage (2nd one down on this page, keep scrolling)

I think as the years go on I may have to choose a lighter colour than the natural dark brown of my youth as the contrast with the white roots is just too striking.
