Red lipstick for beginners - any tips/recommendations?

I tried some of DDs on earlier and really liked it but it's SUCH a contrast to the pinky/browns that I usually wear that I'm not sure I'd have the bottle to leave the house in it!

I'm going out this weekend so seems as good a time as any to try, but can anyone recommend one that would be good for a 'beginner'? The one I used is a Rimmel one and a really bright, matte, Marilyn Monroe red. I'm wondering if a lipgloss or something might be better to try?

I'd be grateful for any tips :)

Another vote for Revlon lip butter in Candy Apple. Also Stila lip balms give quite a lot of pigment but are soft and wearable.

I did my own challenge made it up myself which was Wear Red Lipstick Every Day In December
The easiest to use ( for me ) is Clinique chubbie pencil type lipstick .
It's more of a sheer colour , not long lasting though .
My favourite is an old Estée Lauder , which DD has pinched and I need to replace

BloodFlower · 24/04/2014 21:25

I own a few Revlon reds, and the matte balm in 'Shameless' is by far the best. A good, blue toned red which is flattering to teeth. Revlon lip butter in 'Red Velvet' is deeper but sheerer and a good effortless everyday red.

MAC are also great, but I tend to wear Ruby Woo etc. at night because I find them more high maintenance.

BloodFlower · 24/04/2014 21:27

Sorry, OP, didn't realise you weren't after a bold, matte red. The Revlon Red Velvet suggestion still stands though. Candy Apple is nice too, but it's a bit too orangey for me.

The Estée Lauder one I like is scarlet siren

Thanks v much everyone, I really appreciate it. have got a massive list! BloodFlower, I love the look of bold reds but feel a bit nervous about wearing them! I definitely need a blue-toned one though, the Revlon ones sound really nice, I don't mind about re-applying through the night.

The red velvet is a lovely colour, similar to what I usually wear.

OfficerVanHalen, I love that colour! Affordable too at £2.99! What does it make your teeth look like?

I like this blog, which seems to show the one you mentioned as pretty great value.

BOFster · 24/04/2014 23:22

Ooh, I've seen Officer in that, I think- she looks GORGEOUS Grin

Lipstick Queen have a red that they claim suits everyone, Medieval.

I have Lipstick Queen Saint Red but its not my favourite, I like the colour but not the texture although less is more so perhaps I am not applying it properly.

Agree with PP who recommended Maybelline Hollywood Red as an easy one to wear that suits a lot of people.

Stick with it OP. I found red lipstick looked really alarming on me when I first tried it but now I love it. My favourite is Rimmel Moisture Renew in Diva Red - blue toned and non drying and cheap!

MrsMeow · 25/04/2014 09:16

Fab thanks so much everyone, I'm off to town with my list Grin BOF the reviews are pretty fab on that blog and doesn't the red look lovely?

DD put some on when I was trying it, at about 4pm and it still looked good at about 10pm, after her eating dinner etc. they definitely have staying power!

Lotta, thats it - alarming! Its just the polar opposite to my usual look, but I like it at the same time!

Bobbi Brown Red is great and is supposed to suit almost anyone. Lovely texture and not too blue. Whilst I love the shade of Ruby Woo I agree that it's a bugger to wear as it is so matte and very drying. Mac Russian Red is good and Bobbi Brown Red Carpet is my go to going out lipstick. I have Red Tango from Estee Lauder which is gorgeous and I wear Lipstick Queen Medieval, which is very sheer, on jeans and converse days. I like red lipstick...

You might find this tutorial useful

MrsMeow · 26/04/2014 10:26

Thanks RubyReins and BecauseIsaidSO :) I ended up buying a couple of the suggested ones yesterday Blush but have decided that the one I tried first, the Collection 2000 Deluxe one is the best shade for me - isn't that always the way?!

going to practise applying it now as it's quite unforgiving if you go out of the lines and stains really quickly!

BecauseISaidSO that tutorial is fab, thanks. I love Lisa Eldridge :)

Ruby Woo is a lovely colour, will definitely ask for a demonstration when I'm next in Selfridges.
