Talk me out of a bob..or into one I don't know

I have long straight hair and I am bored of it. I think the length is dragging my face down (its sort of by my boobs..well in a bra anyway its not knee length Grin ) the trouble is because it is so straight and fine layers don't work as they don't kink or bounce. A blow dry falls out. I am fearful of bobbed hair as it doesn't 'bob' it just hangs limp.

Also is a bob a bit 'mumsy'? A 'mum bob'
I want a change and am lacking in inspiration

A bob with a fringe that is very bluntly cut can loom really stylish. Doesn't suit everyone though but works well with fine hair.

An asymmetric bob is very of the moment and should not look mumsy, particularly if you go quite short. Google asymmetric bob for images (sorry, I can't do links) & you should get some inspiration.

I had hair like yours and ended up with a pixie cut Shock best thing I ever did Smile

FoxyHarlow123 · 21/04/2014 08:43

Go for a long bob. Get loreal fibrology shampoo, reverse shampoo/condition and a big hair gadget - you'll never look back!!

ivykaty44 · 21/04/2014 08:45

A long straight bob may work, ask your hairdresser and explain your hair just hangs so you want it cut with that in mind

JupiterGentlefly · 21/04/2014 08:46

I would love to try the big hair thing.! Liking the asymmetrical bob too.
I did have a pixie cut many moons ago and I loved it. Wouldn't want to do the growing out again!

I did just that a few days ago. Armed with a picture of Sandra Bullock with a long bob I asked my hairdresser to chop off my long hair that was dragging me down and making me look older. I'm thrilled with the result.

If you're searching Google images sandra bullock and heidi klum have some great bobs, with and without side fringes.

This is what I have now.

Before you cut it experiment with different styles.

cakeymccakington · 21/04/2014 10:43

I have similar sounding hair to you and have mine cut in a bob, no fringe, just straight round. Love it, esp cos I can wait as long as I like before my next cut and it doesn't look silly lol

callamia · 21/04/2014 10:48

I've had various varieties of bobs for ever. Long at the front, shorter at the back, heavy fringe. I keep it long enough that it's possible to tie it back too (DS thinks my hair is an activity centre).

I also have straight and fine hair, and a bob makes it look less limp than when it's long. Go for it - it'll grow back really fast if it's not for you.

JupiterGentlefly · 21/04/2014 10:52

Burnished I like that! Do I get her facial features as well? That would work.. I think.

Admittedly she'd look well bald.
I'm going back next week for the colour. I'll ask if they can fix the face the following week ;-)

I have fine straight hair and wear it in a bob, I don't think it looks mumsy. It definitely suits my hair type, I just run the straightners through it in the morning to give it a big of a shape. Go for it.

SquidgyMummy · 21/04/2014 11:05

I like the sandra bullock bob too. i had my similar length hair (to you yours, OP) cut into an aysmmetrical bob, as I would always have it tied back as DS was always fiddling with it.

It was a bit too short, so i prefer it now it is growing back. To be honest I will probaby leave it and let it grow back long.

My advice is to have a long bob first and see how you like it, you can always go shorter more easily than waiting 3 years for it to grow back

Lovecat · 21/04/2014 11:08

I recently got this haircut (we have the same face shape but there any resemblance ends... :( ) and my hair is fine and limp and was long in long layers (kind of a Rachel).

I have to admit, the new hair can look mumsy if I don't do anything with it, but if I spend 5 mins putting a bit of product in it and 10 mins blowdrying it properly, it looks pretty much like the photo and I've had a lot of compliments about it.

I think whether a haircut looks Mumsy or not is down to your personal style or lack of more likely. Long hair or a bob can both look dull.
