What to wear on legs/feet for office in summer?

I struggle with this every year so I thought I would ask for some advice here.

I work in a fairly smart office environment and spend a lot of time with clients too. I occasionally wear a suit but most of the time wear smart dark coloured dresses with a bright cardigan, or black skinny trousers with a blouse.

The trousers are easy- I just wear nude knee highs and black flats or heels all year round. But with dresses, my default is black opaques, which obviously looks a bit wrong if the weather is warmer.

I feel with slightly longer dresses (to mid knee) nude or sheerer black tights with black shoes look ok, but I don't know what to do with the shorter ones. I feel a bit exposed in lighter tights and it doesn't look right with flats or loafers (which I only wear with above the knee dresses, but I can't wear heels every day!)

Do I just need to get some lighter coloured dresses for summer- and if so, what shoes would be most useful/ versatile with them? I feel nude shoes look a bit like I'm going to a wedding- navy blue perhaps?

I feel really stupid that I can't work this out!

Good question. I'm intrigued too. Bump. Hehe.

Buy new dresses!
And have more shoes in more colours - my neutrals include camel/grey/snakeskin (in a brown/cream/pink colour)

I think it is so mean that the fashion police mock sheer tights. I know they look a bit policewoman, but my legs are not presentable in a bare non-nylon-ed state. So I spend winter in skirts+opaques and summer in trousers. Can someone invent a stylish way to wear skirts without insisting on bare legs in summer?

rollonthesummer · 16/04/2014 22:01

Sorry, but what are nude knee highs?

Boots?

rollonthesummer · 16/04/2014 22:03

Summery dresses with bare legs (plus a bit of decent fake tan!) and tan heels or pretty ballerinas.

WipsGlitter · 16/04/2014 22:03

Pop socks

I wear nude tights and think they are perfectly acceptable.

You do have to get the right shade/ denier...but it is possible.

Boots 7d and M&S autograph bare leg are both good IMO

If you want to wear nude tights, a dress/skirt but not heavy shoes, what about something like this which has semi-covered toes but still aerated from zalando
My legs really need leg make up so I always wear nude tights and these sorts of shoes sort out the toes/ sandal problem.

I hope Wips response is to rollonthesummer not to the OP!!

I have tended to stick with light wool trousers so far in this hot spell. When I finally get round to waxing my legs I'll probably go for nude tights , nude fishnets or bare legs on really hot days

ceeveebee · 16/04/2014 22:16

Oh and I have a rule that I don't wear black after the clocks go forward until September. I wear navy, light grey or light colours in summer

rollonthesummer · 16/04/2014 22:18

Pop socks, of course! My grandma used to wear those; I didn't think they still existed!!

ILoveWooly · 16/04/2014 22:20

I have vowed to let this year be different... I also spend the winter in dresses and opaque's then the summer in trousers!

I am lucky that for all I have a lot of client contact I work in a very 'arty' environment, I think it lowers the formal expectation.

So far I have purchased:

trousers and a light knit long sleeve top with a silk front (was also LK but can't find the link). I plan to wear it with pumps.

This dress to wear with tan wedges.

I have also booked myself in for a regular (very light) spray tan to take me from luminous white to white for summer and my usual shellac nails.

I hate summer workwear!

ManicMinor · 16/04/2014 22:25

I'm exactly the same - my conclusion is to wear my longer lighter weight dresses with nude tights and neutral or brown shoes, and then smart cropped or 7/8 trousers with small heeled loafers. I'm just not comfortable with shorter dresses and nude tights for the office. The shorter dresses can wait for opaque tight season again (which I stretch as much as I possibly can - still wearing opaques at the moment!)

missmagnum · 16/04/2014 22:26

I don't wear black tights between Apr and Oct its my personal rule Smile. I either wear trousers or nude tights. Couldn't possibly do bare legs, they are blindingly white and I'm rubbish at fake tan. Mostly wear nude or tan shoes and have a few brightly coloured pairs.

Maisie0 · 16/04/2014 23:07

But nude tights are so troublesome. I always manage to get holes in them, and then it is so obvious that there is like a "hole" shape on my leg. Plus they are never really the right size for a petite. It is so annoying. So if I walk down the street, you see either the tone of my legs being different to my face, or that there are creases on my legs which makes you wonder what I did to them. Blush

And the cost of tights per summer.... Sigh. I tried fake tan that you put on yourself once, and just before a wedding. I shall never forget that too.
