Do you have a style icon that you take inspiration from?

I read somewhere recently that if you're a bit clueless about what to wear and what goes with what, etc, it's a good idea to copy someone in the public eye whose style you admire.

Just wondering if anyone else does this and who you've chosen to copy. Your approx. age would be good too, as I'm looking for inspiration. I'm so tired of my grungy style and would like to (eventually) age somewhat gracefully and look a bit less of a scruff-bag Grin

I wouldn't say follow or copy but I do like the way that kate moss and Kirsten stewart dress and dress quite similar to them.
I've always gone for that sort of rock chick look, but I suppose I'm more of a rock hen now -over 40!
I like biker jackets, skinnies, long boots, ankle boots.
I do like to dress up sometimes too.

Olivia Palermo. Love her style, she always looks great and I love her 'polished' look; she does casual dressing very well.

Olivia Palermo, Giovanna Battaglia, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cruella DeVille, Claire Underwood. No consistency here.

So do you copy certain pieces - like a jacket or a bag - or more just the overall look - so a shape/length/colour of trouser, for instance?

How do you go about finding pieces that are similar to what you've seen this person wear?

Do you have a similar sort of figure to your icon too - so you know that what suits them will suit you? Or is it more about the colours/shapes they (or, more likely, a stylist), puts together?

Sorry - you see how clueless I am!

The reason I ask about the figure thing is that most women in the public eye are very thin these days, but how many of us are? I'm not huge - I'm a size 8 - but I'm a 40-year-old mum of two who could do with going to the gym a lot more than I do and my figure reflects that. So while I can look at Olivia Palermo or Gwyneth Paltrow and admire the was they dress, I would probably look like crap in the things they look amazing in.

One more question - do you use department store's personal dressers to help you find appropriate pieces?

hi
I know that wasn't the kind of look you were after :) - (still a bit grungy no?) but I wanted to add-
I'm 5ft 5 and size 8-10 so not as tall as KM and KS and I wouldn't want to be thinner than I am.
Have a look in your wardrobe as another thing I do is go on pinterest and type in something like "blazer and skinny jeans outfits" or "skirt and boots" (rather than KM/KS in this and that) and you will get loads of ideas without having to spend. :)

I have used a personal shopper once-she was awful, didn't get my style at all, she was about 15 years younger than me and tried to dress me like her mum I think- I bought nothing!

I like watching Gok, I find it entertaining, but I would never wear 99% of the stuff he puts on people- but you might get ideas, just not for me.

Btw You wouldn't look crap -just try to find stuff that suits you (start with your own clothes) and celebs should look amazing they have an army of people faffing around them.

Exactly what foxdongle said (and we are the same size).

Go on Pinterest. You get a bigger range than just slebs.

I have a looks I like, just repin stuff that looks good, and I'd happily look like any of them.

BelindaAllWorkedOut · 12/04/2014 09:37

Yes, it's all about Pinterest for me (I don't watch Gok) - I follow enough people to get a stream of good pics and repin what I like onto a looks board, that I look at from time to time. I also do a search on a specific item if not sure how to wear it.
