£200 to spend on a summer capsule wardrobe. What would you get?

I have amassed about £200 of John Lewis vouchers, and I'm going back to work in June after maternity leave.

My summer clothes are a disgrace. I have one smart spotted dress, a nice flowered skirt, a pair of linen mix grey trousers and one smart short sleeve white shirt.

I'm planning to spend the vouchers and maybe a bit more on underwear.

I have no idea where to start! I love the idea of blazers, cropped trousers and done kind of dress but beyond that....

So what would be in your fantasy capsule work wardrobe?

What kind of workplace is it and what kind of shape are you Smile

Antidote · 11/04/2014 13:56

I'm 5'9", size 12 on top, 14 on the bottom. Fairly slim waist, not much boobage, but not flat chested. Good calves, chunky upper thighs.

I'm a doctor, but mostly desk based so don't need to be able to run flat out round the hospital.

I'd get -

Black cigarette trousers in a thick stretch cotton - invaluable
A couple of fine knit jumpers in flattering colours and shapes
A couple of silky tees
Some pointy tan flats
Some comfy smart black mid heels
Two dresses - wrap if that suits you, or boxy shifts with short sleeves. A length that means you can go bare legged when it gets hot.
A statement necklace in silver - if you can stretch to two, get a bright coloured one too.

I would get a couple of dresses , cardigans, and some linen trousers( last year m and s had some nice ones believe it or not). I live in dresses in the summer as they are just so easy to throw on and look presentable.

These are great ideas, thanks. I love the idea of fine knit jumpers. Brilliant.

How about some cotton jumpers V/crew neck? I bought one in JL years ago and it's lasted so well. As it's cotton it's ideal for summer.
Also a stripy long sleeved top - navy and white..?

Use the free one hour personal shopper service at John Lewis before you spend the vouchers. They will help you with styles, colours & what suits you etc.

They have a lovely broderie anglais skirt that I've had my eye on. It is dark blue, quite full and about knee length.

Antidote · 12/04/2014 09:24

Thanks msasprey. I'd totally forgotten that they do that. I'll see if my closest one does it. I love the idea of the cigarette pants, the shift dress, and the blue skirt.

Watching with interest. I've got JL vouchers too, and the same size although a short arse at 5' 6in!

I've just bought some trousers from Boden to try out. Not cheap but reallyv nice material and cut. They were the bistro crop (read reviews though re length, esp as you are tall) and the 7/8 chinos. Gap do really nice stretch cotton trousers I haven't check ed recently but imagine they might do a cigarette style

Anyone seen nice flats that are stylish but don't cost the earth, and are slim fit for narrow width? Any I get end up like boats!
