home hair colourant that covers grey?, i have very thick aubyn/red hair

Just used nice n easy permanent hair colours, my hair looks exactly the same, used 2 packets of light chestnut brown, have long thick hair, greying on top and sides. Left it on for longer than they say on packet,

Grey hair still there so will need to colour again but will give my hair a couple of weeks before I go again

Is your grey a skunk stripe or just interment grey hairs within the whole head?

I use them to cover up if I have any grey showing before I get the chance to have my roots done.

Majirel with 20 vol cream peroxide is the way forward.

I used nice n easy 3 days ago and has covered my greys - but then there are just a few of them dotted around in my hair so if you had more it might be different?

How long did you leave it on? I think you can leave it on longer for stubborn greys it said on pack.

No not skunk stripe anniemaybe, just grey/white hair showing on top head and above ears, left it on for about 40 mins, I've not heard of those products, thanking will check them out, I also have sensitive skin and allergy prone so would need to take that into consideration

I have tried EVERYONE of the home dyes on the market and none of them could cover my hair without it being double processed so I did my research and bought the professional dye.

It works wonders because the developer is strong enough to penetrate the White and then deposit the dye deeper. I was impressed in that it was thick so didn't drip everywhere, was easy to target the hair with a tint brush, didn't sting like Nice 'n' Easy and my hair actually was shinier after using.
The other good thing is you can mix in different shades to achieve a more natural look. I went for a mid brown but added some warmth and it is a lovely shiny chestnut brown.

You need John Freda in your life! But more expensive but so worth it, and leaves your hair super shiny which you don't get with most home dyes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if you don't mind paying a bit more (about £17ish) for a ready mixed colour, esalon.com is your friend

You wouldn't fancy trying henna? It's a tad messy till u get the hang of it but would look fanatstic with your hair colour. You'd look like a sassy red head as it covers greys but obviously these will be a brighter shade of red than the others. I used to use lush caca marron (yes great name I know haha). Plus it improves the condition of your hair no end. Only thing is you need a hairdresser to help you get rid of any chemical dye you have in your hair as supposedly there is a risk of it turning green :D

Just had a look at that esalon.com - looks really good (although the ash blonde that I normally use is showing as grey ). Is it really good, and does the colour cover all the greys?

sirC tbh it took me two cycles with my order to get the shade I wanted, but that was also because I already had so much residual dye on the lengths of my hair from previous skirmishes with Nice and Easy etc.
Now I order a dark blonde and get it personalised to minimise any red tones. It arrives every 10 weeks but you can change that or turn off auto delivery anytime.
The grey coverage is the best I've ever experienced and the product itself left my hair in great condition. It doesn't stink of strong chemicals and there was no itching or irritation at all. Gosh I sound like a salesperson, but it's one of my never change products now.

Watching with interest! My hair grows so quickly though. I have greyish roots after just 4 weeks. So expensive to colour at salon.

WildThong, what percentage of grey do you have? I have a streak at the front that's pretty much white.

Agree with majirel. Get it online or at a hairdressers suppliers. It's what my hairdresser would use but costs me about a third of the cost of her doing it.

miss if I didn't colour my hair, I think I would be pretty much be silver. It's been so long that I can't remember my natural colour, I started going grey in my late 20s. Think Helen Mirren without the glamour

I use Wella Koleston which I get on Amazon - I went grey when I was a teen so pretty much 100% grey now but this one covers it all up!

How do the Majirel and Kolestan dyes work? Do you have to mix them? Is it difficult?

Ask your hairdresser for advice on colour. I use 3/4 of a tube of 7.0 and 1/4 of a 6.34 mixed in with 80ml of 6% peroxide. It's pretty much the same as what you'd get in a home-hairdye kit but salon quality. Get yourself a proper brush, a mixing bowl thing with measurements on the side (so you get the right amount of peroxide) and a box of disposable gloves. Any that's on your ears/head/neck etc can be removed with nail polish remover.

With Majirel it's a 50ml tube with 75ml cream peroxide( like the Jerome Russell one which is already measured at 75ml) either 20 or 30 vol.

You just squeeze the tube into a tint bowl, add the cream peroxide, mix it together with your tint brush and bung it on (don't use metal) Leave for 30 mins and then rinse out.

I have found the thicker consistency is so much better to use. It doesn't drip all down your neck etc and my hair felt silkier and was shinier after using.
Google the colour chart as there is a vast array of reds.

I do about a 50/50 mix with colour and developer - t'is easy, mix it up, brush it on roots then leave it for 40 mins and rinse out - not a grey hair in sight and looks natural - unlike the nasty shop bought ones and it doesn't burn my scalp either!
