Henna on grey/dyed blonde hair

A friend of mine has dyed blonde hair but has grown out a good couple of inches of grey and wants to henna the lot.

She has heard that it will go orange - is this the grey or the dyed bit?

Is it possible at all?

Bumping for you, I'm sure there are a couple of henna experts on S&B. I have only tried Lush hennas and that was before I had much grey, but the ones I did have turned quite coppery, wouldn't say orange. This was against dark hair though, not sure what it would be like on blonde. The Lush hennas come in four colours and only the lightest one is supposed to be full on fiery red.

I do know the one thing she shouldn't do is put henna on top of recent conventional dye because the henna can react with the metals and turn the hair green! Not sure how recent though.

At the age of 16 I thought I'd go blonde (as you do at that age!) so bought a lightening kit, and left it on too long - hair went orange. No problem, I thought, I'll just use the henna powder that I normally use (on my brunette hair)......khaki green hair!! and to teach me a lesson my mother made me go to school for a day like that before buying me a box of brunette hair dye to reverse it all. I learnt my lesson - hope it helps your friend!

PS This was over 30 years ago - I still remember!!

I use a mixture of the brown and red-brown Lush Hennas on my dark brown with a few greys in it hair, the greys go a coppery blonde colour. I have read that using a mix of the red and black ones instead gives better grey coverage but I haven't tried it myself. I think there are henna forums, might be worth a google.

Thanks for the replies. So it's not necessarily a no-no. She'll be glad of that.

I think I'll have a little look round the internet with her next time she comes round. She's not massively tech-savvy, but I think she needs to see all the options herself and make up her mind.
