I don't want to speak too soon but after 20 years of battling adult acne, I think I have found the answer...and it is available from Boots

I have had spots around my chin, neck, jawline for as long as I can remember. Have tried loads of different treatments but none have worked. Antibiotics worked but couldn't stay on them long-term. Had some success with benzoyl peroxide but got fed up with the accidental bleaching on my and the DC clothes and the routine took ages.

Have been using La Roche Posay Efflacar Duo for just over 2 weeks and have not had a spot yet Shock (hope I haven't jinxed it). It is so easy to use - I use the Efflacar gel wash then put the Duo (which is like a moisturiser) on my affected areas (I use normal moisturiser on the rest of my face) twice a day.

I really hope this is the answer. it looks promising Smile

Just stumbling in and I was going to say something about aspirin face mask.

Then I noticed Chaos was going to use it on her 10yo DS.

Chaos. You're not supposed to give children under 12 aspirin as it cause Reye's syndrome. So ask your GP first although they may not quite know.
However I do know that when exposed to water, something changes within te chemical structure. Whether this will make it safe to use on DC or worse, I've no idea.

Sorry being a party pooper. Sad

Although aspirin face masks are fab. Get rid of blackheads and even calms rosacea redness.

Thanks for these reccs. My 16yr old is suffering with cystic acne and we were hoping going on the pill would sort it. Sadly no. If I was rich I'd keep her in bliss cleanser but there has to be a cheaper way!

Just marking place so that I can come back later and write all of this down.

I had laser treatment a few years ago which was wonderful but i can't afford to go back for top ups and am having occasional flare ups now.

Thanks for posting op

Marking place on here so I can go to boots later.
My flare up is so bad at the minute it looks like my face is burned. Sad

FrugalFashionista · 12/03/2014 07:55

If Effaclar is not enough, it's a good idea to talk to a GP about other treatment alternatives. Salicylates are effective only in mild cases of acne!

Started this yesterday. Skin feels nice, though obviously still spotty.
Fingers crossed, though.

Marking place to read for 14 yr old DS.

Have any of you tried oil cleansing?

mathanxiety · 14/03/2014 05:24

For cystic acne I think your DD's only hope is Roaccutane Madmomma.

This is interesting - thank you OP!

Since having dc4 and the return of my periods, my skin has been awful. It's definitely hormonal with me so I've tried 2xtablets agnus castus herb twice a day and have seen a huge improvement! I still get the odd painful boil so will definitely try your recommendation

guggenheim · 14/03/2014 07:38

Hi,the laser treatment was great. it was very quick and painless until it came to handing over the cash- that hurt!

It feels odd because you have your eyes covered up but they just swipe a hand held machine over your face and neck. It sort of pings and can feel a bit sharp at times.

I am a huge coward and happy to own up to such, so it really doesn't hurt. If i was less of a wuss then the machiny thing could have been turned up higher and would have worked at a deeper level. The it could have could got rid of the acne scarring too.

I had large nasty painful boils and scarring and smaller flare ups too which the laser treatment stopped. It got rid of some of the redness.
Sorry i have toddler in my lap so this might not make sense!

I want to go back and have the scarring dealt with and stop the new flare ups. No boils since.

guggenheim this may be a stupid question but was the laser gun the same as the one they use for laser hair removal? I have a Philips Lumea and can see a plan forming if so....

guggenheim · 14/03/2014 15:11

Hi, no I don't think it was because he used several different machines and settings- he was terribly proud of them and explained it all Grin.
They all did different things- blackheads, wrinkles, thread veins, redness, sing, dance, make cups of tea..

One of the treatments invloved a freezing cold laser which I quite liked. I only had the 3 because that was all i could afford but it killed off the active acne and did away with the boils.

For me it made an almost instant and noticeable difference( especially to my bank balance) Very much worth it.

I can see how tempting it would be to try the Lumea- maybe google to see if it's possible? I guess that the Lumea is just a small strength version of the big lasers? Wouldn't do any harm to try and then you could report back Smile

Sallystyle · 14/03/2014 17:57

I use it.

I still had to go on antibiotics for acne but it did help a lot.

MrsMarigold · 14/03/2014 18:23

I know this is odd but I find washing my face with Capasal Shampoo, it contains coal tar, coconut oil and salicylic acid and it sorted out my skin and it has been awful. It costs about £6.50 and although for dandruff and cradle cap.

Well sods law - since starting this post, I have had a couple of spots but they are not erupting into the horrible massive crusty yellow spots that I have been blighted with forever! They have stayed under the surface and just been a little painful so not affected my appearance Wink
