I have a job interview..what to wear?

I am middle aged and overweight should I wear a skirt suit or a trouser suit.

What colour and what underneath?

The interview is at an assessment centre includes two exams and lasts all day, so i need something comfortable as well as smart.

Where to buy..what to get?

Please help

Give us your height, dress size and where you carry most of your weight.

Are you Apple shape
Pear shape
Straight up and down
Are you top heavy

BrownBeetroot · 12/08/2006 12:55

I would wear black trousers, slighly wide leg, with vest top (colour) and black shirt over the top. I would wear small heel

Tenalady · 12/08/2006 12:57

What sort of post are you applying for?

BrownBeetroot · 12/08/2006 12:58

this type of thing

zippitippitoes · 12/08/2006 12:59

Probably a bit appley and five foot four, about size 18

It's a civil service job HEO

I have short cropped hair
and never wear heels or make up yikes

I'm a similar sort of shape Zippi and I've always gone for plain jacket and vest top with a patterned / floral skirt worn with a kitten heel. Spot of make up just to give you colour, keep any jewellery simple. Good luck!

BrownBeetroot · 12/08/2006 13:04

i would wear trousers..plain tbh...

Tenalady · 12/08/2006 13:05

Yep a nice navy trouser suit with the wider leg, A short jacket style looks best for your shape. I would wear a light fresh colour blouse with a small collar maybe a pale peach, pink or lemon. Bring the button down to as low as you can without being too immodest IYKWIM

Smart but feminine.

Close toe shoe or ankle in black with a matching small bag.

Stick a little mascara and a little colour on your cheeks and Hey Presto!

The job is yours

Tenalady · 12/08/2006 13:06

closed toe shoe or ankle boot was what I meant

zippitippitoes · 12/08/2006 13:07

my dd says trousers...it's for the Immigration and nationality department

I work from home at the moment so it's a potentially radical departure..absolutely unrelated to anything I've ever done so I have to somehow get myself into the confident mode necessary.

First impressions are made in the first 4 seconds of the interview based on your appearance and your SMILE, try practising this one

zippitippitoes · 12/08/2006 13:25

I'm going to have to work very hard at this..

well I've been shopping and found something nice in Wallis but not the right size

they have the jacket online but not the trousers

there is this from Next

or this but I think it will look too boxy

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 12/08/2006 20:38

or this one except the model looks like that mudering woman off eastenders

and you seem to have to set up an account and order a catalogue if you order from next which is annoying

OP posts:
zippitippitoes · 13/08/2006 09:51

chickened out of ordering last night but will have to get something pdq

Zippi I like the first Next trouser suit, but I don't know squat about work wear, or what that suit would look like if you were not the same shape as the model.

I would go for trouser suit over skirt because on a larger more mature woman I think it is easy for a knee length skirt to look frumpy.

You sound just how I imagined you - cropped hair etc. How do you normally dress when not going for interviews?

helsy · 13/08/2006 12:08

Trouser suit with a longish jacket and wide trousers (black/pinstripe or grey), couple of long-sleeved jersey tops in bright colours, mid-heel court shoes. Sort of thing I'd wear and I work in admin in public sector and I'm a similar age height and shape to you.

zippitippitoes · 13/08/2006 12:36

thanks..when not going to interviews I normally wear jeans and t shirts..I am quite lazy in the clothes department and totally poor toboot!

so i am wearing like sailing t shirts from ten years ago! animal and that stuff! and five years ago I was quite reasonably thin and intend to revert so puts off buying clothes!
