Dresses over trousers?

Are they a massive no, or still okay?
I know it's a fine line between fab and old bag anyway, but are they just wrong altogether, even if I get it right?
I am imagining some 60's style tight fitting mini skirt tunic dresses over skinny jeans with ballet pumps, or wide leg linen trouses and a sheer wrap dress?
Is it all too Trinny and Susannah?

I love that boho look but alas I beleive it only looks good on stick thin folk.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 11/08/2006 12:37

I think they are old hat now, as everyone wears them

WatTylermoonfiend · 11/08/2006 12:41

I still wear it, but tbh, having been wearing them for years. I think I'm an unstylish scrawny old bag - but it amazing how many times I get complimented when I am wearing dress over trews. So...?

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 12:42

NO! Boho is what I want to avoid. The dresses i have, that I can't wear bare legged now i'm a respectable momma type, are very short very tight vintage ones, so would be more like a long top than dress.
Can see your point with the wrap dresses though.

I wear some dresses over trousers but my excuse is that I am 6ft tall and most dresses look like long tops on me anyway!!!
I usually stick to shirt dresses or sports dresses that look ok. Don't know about more floaty, going out kind of dresses though.

WatTylermoonfiend · 11/08/2006 12:47

Many of the autumn tops are longer so think it will look lovely! I will be wearing jumper dresses (for want of a better description) over trousers in a tunic stylee.

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 12:53

Good! I think it will be nice too. Loving the sweater dresses Gap have at the minute.
So another question, how short can you go for a dress with thick tights and flat knee high boots when you're out with your baby. I don't want to cross the line into 'slut mummy'.

Spursmum I'm 5'9 so think the same as you!

Tutter · 11/08/2006 12:55

have always wanted to try.

but i have slim legs and a wide torso (thick-waisted) so worry that, with tight-fitting trews, it would accentuate the barrel-on-matchsticks look.

WatTylermoonfiend · 11/08/2006 13:01

dunno Avalou, but if you find out, be sure to let me know! I'm 36 but have nice legs, so with the safety of 70 dernier, I tend to want short. So I'll be old, muttony slut mummy...

(muttonyslut and Sluttonlymutt- what great posting names, must remember that

FrannyandZooey · 11/08/2006 13:06

I always think to myself "do I look like a desperate 30-something trying to look trendy"?

Then I just wear them anyway. I think it is fun and looks nice.

Tutter I am that shape too - try it with wide legged linen pants or flarey jeans, it balances out ok.

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 13:24

It does look good!
And at least we're not wearing the likes of baby pink playboy crop tops and hipsters(shudder)

I also think skirts can be short as you like (just not bum cleavage short) so long as you have good thick tights and flat shoes!
But please, correct me if I'm just being deluded.

or dressing in pink spangly tops, butterfly clips and sparkly flip flops to match our 8-yr-old daughters (don't scoff, I have friends who do bleeeuuuurrrggghh!)

Mascaraohara · 11/08/2006 13:27

I love the dress over trouser/jeans look but I am hippy so tend to avoid.. which I had more guts. Think it looks fab!!

I think it's a great maternity look, too.

CodGuevara · 11/08/2006 14:36

yes you haev to be very thin adn no lumpy jeans

ledodgyrobespierre · 11/08/2006 14:38

I disagree about the thin thing we saw a big girl performing in an open mic night at the pub the other week and she was wearing jeans with a shirt dress and a vest top underneath and she looked fab it's how you wear it imo.

AvaLou · 11/08/2006 14:44

Indeed and the thin one of trinny and sue looks terrible in her shirt dresses over trousers sometimes. Mainly when they have a low cut neckline (and they are experts!? pah)
Bad look if you have no boobs at all I think.
