Invitation to a party - formal black and white...but

I only have purple! It's like cadburys purple, long and flowing but can I wear it?

It's a friends 40th (casino style) party, but am I going to look stupid if everyone else is in black or white - would you wear it?

If you would, what colour accessories? Silver?

I would at least make a nod towards the dress code. Purple shoes?
It might be really embarrassing to be the only one. Also if the birthday boy/girl has requested it shouldn't you try and show willing.
White is very harsh though.

Your friend is likely to wear a colour to stand out. You should most definitely not wear a purple dress if the invite states black and white.

I think you should stick to the theme too. I would feel very self conscious rocking up in a purple dress.

White can look lovely with blue/silver, as on Eva Mendes.

Agree it's better to stick to the theme. I went to a wedding once where the dress code was black for guests. The bride wore a slinky red dress. Unfortunately she was upstaged by another guest (a former model) who also decided to rock up in a red gown and ignore the dress code. There were fireworks. Go with the rules unless you want to annoy the birthday girl!
