Do I have to wear a hat/fascinator for a wedding

Going to a wedding next week. Last one I went to with same group of people I was about the only woman not wearing something in my hair. I stand out a bit too as I have white bobbed hair (used to be prematurely white but I'm 'growing into it' now.)
I really hate fussy things on my head. I have quite a pared down style and fascinators or other hair adornments don't really fit with that.
I have a lovely, tailored dress to wear, good shoes, nice bag and a smart coat to wear on top. Will I be ok without a hat or hat substitute and, if not, any suggestions as to what I could wear?

I absolutely loathe fascinators. The never look good on anyone. I never where hats either because then I have hat hair for the rest of the day. You hair sounds fab, show it off.

Hello everyone I loved this discussion of hats and fascinators, really funny thank you.... Now I don't have to worry about wearing a hat or fascinator to a wedding, I am just going to hit town and buy a gorgeous hair slide. What a great excuse!!

I love hats and fascinators, I have a lovely collection of unusual ones. It's up to you though, no one will notice.

How about nice hair jewellery instead?

I love hats and have just bought a very plain straw for a wedding at the end of June: should I not wear it? You have me worried now...

Floisme · 13/06/2014 13:31

I love hats too, cressetmama - please wear it!

Don't see the point of fascinators though.

cressetmama · 13/06/2014 13:55

Thank you, Floisme! Very happy for the reassurance. And I agree: hate fascinators!!

I have a funny story: some years ago, I went to a friend's wedding (we were in our late twenties back then). None of her university/school friends had a hat (but lots of lovely outfits though). We had a girly lunch just before the church ceremony at my friend's parents house, and when her (fairly posh) mum found out about the hats, she was horrified. So she went to her bedroom and brought plenty of hats which she randomly handed out to us girls. The result looked very funny (I had a black hat fir for a funeral for instance, and there were some very funky colour combinations)!
