Help me - I need to dye my hair

Bar a few sessions with Shaders and Toners in my youth and a year of having my hair highlighted pre children when I could afford it, I haven't dyed my hair. However, there's more than a few grey ones now and I fancy dyeing it but haven't got much money.

Am I a fool to think about dyeing it at home? Is maintenance a nightmare? Any recommendations re brands etc? Or should I bite the bullet and get it done at a salon? I've got dark brown hair btw.

the salon I went to use aveda products which i think are supposed to be quite gentle

i dye my hair every couple of months or so9have got laods of grey now0. i use loreal. you can put it on wet hair which i find easier and i dont have to use two packs.

I use semi-perm ones now as the perm ones just seem to really build-up, ends of my hair are virtually black. Would ove to get it done properly but cost just seems so indulgent.
