Cape - to buy or not to buy?

Was weighing up the odds of buying a cape, not a coat style one, but more of the thin, lightweight wrap variety to wear over bulky jumpers with skinnies and boots or to just throw on when going out in car to do school run rather than wearing a coat. Am I deluding myself that they look ok or will I just look like I have picked up the nearest blanket and slung it over my shoulders???
TIA

I have a black wool cape which I was given by my mother-in-law and I love it. However I have no idea and I don't really care (much) whether people think I look like I have slung a blanket around my shoulders!!!!!! I think I look glamorous and I am warm (possibly deluded though!!)

Does it suit your lifestyle and bag preferences? Quite a few stylish women around here wore capes and ponchos this winter. Garance Dore also seems to like hers.

I am seriously considering bung a navy Jigsaw poncho. I don't usually spend as much on one item but I think they are so handy and elegant.

I have a cheaper black one that I lived in post baby to feel good out and about

Shop thanks - the glamorous look was what I was hoping for, but fear it may not be the reality!! Grin Have seen a few people wearing them and on them, it looked smart and chic. Just thought it may be a little more practical too with a thicker jumper rather than trying to squeeze into a coat and look like the Michelin woman.

Frugal, yes - would suit my lifestyle and bag preferences - maybe I should just go for it and buy one in the sales.

MrsWelly sorry x-posted - so didn't see your reply. I have poncho too, which is possibly what started me off thinking about a cape, as have had a suprising amount of wear from it - but tend to wear it more as an extra layer instead of a cardigan or jumper, whereas a cape would definitely be a coat substitute.

I have recently bought a ludicrously glam fur trimmed cape I love it!!!! Not sure what others think, and I don't care

SunnyL · 07/02/2014 17:29

I just made a beige wool cape and I think it looks fabulous with skinnies and boots. I posted a pic of it on my Facebook page and a couple of ladies who are really glamorous have asked me to make them one too so clearly capes are 'in'.

Bonsoir · 07/02/2014 18:27

I love capes! I have a beautiful navy wool Alberto Biani one, and a khaki/black down one from Marni. Both worn a lot!

Weelady77 · 07/02/2014 18:29

I'm looking for one too seen a nice black one in next think I may treat myself Smile

StyleOverSubstance · 09/02/2014 10:08

Have ordered one in black with a fur collar! I am easily swayed and will happily lay the blame on MN if questioned!!

Steben where did you get the cape please?

KissesBreakingWave · 09/02/2014 11:27

Surely it'll get caught in stuff or in the way when you're fighting supervillains? There's a big rant about it in The Incredibles.

Steben · 09/02/2014 13:23

Just tried to find a link but couldn't - I got it from debenhans from a brand I have never heard of called voulez vous - I think it was quite a bargain at 45 as well.

Thank you
