How many jumpers and cardigans do you have?

I am just about to move and realised that although I never feel 100% happy with my outfits any more I appear to have way more actual clothes than ever before Hmm
I need to limit but am constantly making excuses to keep certain things for eg an old Hobbs top I used to wear to work that could be smart casual but is cashmere so hard to clean...can't quite throw it out.

I was just looking through Jigsaw's email with their basics range and suddenly had an urge to completely boot out EVERYTHING bar 2 pairs of trousers and start again.

Is this madness? Should I just start with minimising what I have(a drawer full of jumpers and half a wardrobe of cardigans Shock )? How do you choose what stays and goes?

Mine are folded in a drawer in the (1m wide bog-standard, IKEA Pax) wardrobe. Out of season items (i.e. linen summery things) are folded in a drawer under the bed. Longer cardigans/coatigans (what a stupid word) are on hangers in the wardrobe.

Like I said, the rest of my wardrobe is mainly a capsule of neutral trousers and skirts and a few solid-colour dresses!

I've had some of my knitwear items for 10-15 years, some were new this year, and most are somewhere in between. I probably buy around 5-6 items a year (not all in winter) and do cull anything too worn, faded or moth-eaten.

dexter73 · 02/02/2014 13:26

JosephineBornapart - I iron them before I wear them. I don't iron them before I put them away.

Passthecake30 · 02/02/2014 18:12

I now have the urge to shop!

I have about 4 cardis for work, 1 for home and 4 jumpers. I struggle finding things that fit (6ft) so I wear things until they fall apart!

Artandco · 02/02/2014 18:20

About 20. Amazed at the 100 numbers! We live in the Swiss alps half the year and even then I could never wear that many

lookdeepintotheparka · 02/02/2014 20:21

No wonder I struggle with what I've got - I need to show DH this thread as he thinks I buy loads of clothes!!

I have 5 jumpers all cheap/sale stuff.

3 cardis ditto cheap ones

I tend to throw out after a year or so because they don't last. I never know if I'll still be in work from one month to the next so I can't invest in anything better. I also can't wear wool.

vitaminC · 02/02/2014 20:41

See, I have the opposite approach - I would hate to have to throw anything out after just one year. What a waste!
I would rather save up and buy one decent item a year, than buy "disposable" tat and have to replace it.

Today, I went out wearing a pair of brown leather lace-up ankle boots (heeled brogues) that I bought in 1992. They were so old-fashioned and mumsy I didn't wear them at all between 2006 and 2012, but this winter they are suddenly fashionable again and I've been getting loads of compliments on them. I don't regret having kept them in the back of the wardrobe all those years. They still fit well, look good and it's like having got a brand new pair of boots - at no cost! Grin

lookdeepintotheparka · 02/02/2014 21:06

I agree it sounds wasteful but tend to buy better quality jeans, trousers and shoes which last me years (bar major changes in fashion/style) - just can't do this with jumpers. Wool would probably last much longer than cotton which is the only fabric I can wear.

Just can't wait to get my summer wardrobe out again - can't bear the whole winter clothes malarkey Grin

Deathwatchbeetle · 03/02/2014 14:27

Lion in the sun - if you are not careful, you will turn into my mother!!!

Except she is less of a Hobbs person and more Damart!!!! Everytime I go to get a cardi out of the wardrobe for her it is "too thick/has no pockets"/"I never liked that one"/"No no the other blue/black/brown one" "That isn't yellow it is cream" (she's no good at colours either).

By the way I got rid of loads before her move whilst she was still in hospital.

It is a running joke - her and her cardies - in my family.

MirandaWest · 03/02/2014 14:30

I have fewer than most people I think.

I have one jumper (multicoloured and chunky for when it is very cold)

Three hoodies - two for in the winter and one summer one

A black chunky cardigan

A black zip up cardigan

A black light weight cardigan

Think that's it.

bluesbaby · 03/02/2014 14:47

:-O

I thought I had loads before I read the responses.

I have 3 cardigans... two very thin jersey fabrics in black and cream, one thick woolly cream cardigan. I actually hate cardigans. Much prefer hoodies.

I had 3 grey hoodies, 5 sweaters (all grey! some with designs), 5 knits.

Snowdown · 03/02/2014 18:05

3 jumper dresses
2 cardigans
3 jumpers

Feels like enough to me, they are all wool, some are cashmere but they are warm. Wanders off feeling like I have the capsule thing sorted! Wink

JemimaMuddledUp · 03/02/2014 20:56

I have 7 jumpers and 7 cardigans. I thought this was quite a lot, I wear one every day at the moment, work or home. But now I feel like I should buy more!

scarlet76 · 03/02/2014 21:25

I have had a major de-clutter over the last 6 months. I have 3 cardigans:

Navy v neck mohair cardigan
Cream cashmere cardigan
Black open front 3/4 sleeve cardigan

And 4 Jumpers:
Camel cashmere crew neck
Navy merino crew neck
grey button back jumper
navy stripe cashmere jumper

GoodnessIsThatTheTime · 04/02/2014 00:18

Scarlet that sounds perfect to me. I keep changing size and needing to start again!

I actually had no idea people kept anything likecsome of the numbers on this thread!!

RonaldMcDonald · 04/02/2014 01:22

More than my tally of sexual partners and tbh I'm a goer

MrsCampbellBlack · 04/02/2014 06:32

John Smedley have a brilliant sale on, if you need to update your knitwear.

peppapigiscomingtotea · 04/02/2014 09:24

I thought I had quite a lot (up to 20, including Summer knits, smart and casual). I can't believe some people have 80. Surely most of them don't get worn from one end of the year to the other.

Lioninthesun · 04/02/2014 09:33

Oooh, the Pageant merino wool jumpers from Smedley look nice...
NO! Must STOP! Shock
