A lady of 40 needs fashion advise

Having attended a birthday party today, where I saw many wonderful outfits on other ladies, I seek some honest advise

I saw a young lady in a brightly patterned pair of harem trousers (gorgeous) and she was wearing them with a pair of ladies Nike Air Force 1 boots (white leather), she looked fab. Also a few others had various nike footwear on with jeans and all looked lovely.

Am I now too old to carry off a look like this?
Are skinny jeans n a blazer now the only option?

I honestly felt very dowdy upon setting eyes on all these gorgeous looks

I'm 39 and I'd wear harems around the house but not sure I'd attempt patterned ones and boots.. Do you have the figure to carry off these looks? Everyone seems to be wearing nike airs as casual shoes these days. Why dont you try it out? it's not about age in my opinion it's about style and confidence and body shape

I'm a size 8, but I guess that doesn't necessarily mean I can wear anything.

Just feel like I'm stuck in a rut, need something different to try

have you read some blogs from similarly aged women?
here are a few that are popular with mumsnetters

Wearing it today

does my bum look 40

WIBT she's a bit younger but loves the trainers look

search through a few of their posts or for other blogs and see who's style you like and try out a few things.
40 is really not too old to try anything in my opinion

FabMum1 · 26/01/2014 22:11

Thank you peasandlove, I'll have a look

It's just so hard putting things together n knowing what looks fab n what looks silly

Have decided patterned harems are not something a 49 year old should be wearing.

What's on trend at the moment?
I always seem to live in jeans, would like something different

Also, am liking the new 'trainers trend', have seen some fab Nikes and NB
Are they comfy?

I thought lady sounded funny. You're going on 50, then. :) I don't know many 40 year olds who would call themselves ladies. Maybe each other in a mock tone.

I think many outfits 20 year olds wear are often the type they will cringe at when they are 40. :)

However, if you think those are fab and you like that style, just wear them.

Even today I saw this over 70 in a cropped fake fur coat, knee length boots and skinny jeans. Definitely something my mother wouldn't wear. Grin But this woman was, and that was fine.

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in, regardless of how you think you should dress.

I just have terrible difficulty putting things together. Maybe I'm a bit hard on myself, but i trawl websites for clothes n really struggle.

Ps I am 40, typo not the other message lol

Have you had a look on Pinterest? It's great for sourcing ideas and looks you could try out.

Can't believe you aged yourself by 10 years! I'm 42 and a size 8, and like to think I'm reasonably on trend. I follow a few style blogs, use Pinterest a lot and love looking at what other women are wearing.

To give us an idea of where we are starting from here, what were YOU wearing at the birthday party today where all these glam women were?

FabMum1 · 03/02/2014 20:17

Believe it or not I was the one wearing a pair of skinnies, a&f sweater with black uggs
Not very exciting I know, lol

I look on Pinterest and find many looks I love, bug can't then seem to find that when I shop, I really struggle
