Does anyone have hair nightmare stories as a teen?

I had permed growing out hair (lightened by sun) - hairdresser cut it and I looked awful in the wind - I was a bit anxious etc and for some reason when I got home I chopped half off.....

My mum marched me to a super expensive hair salon (Jigsaw in Streatham) where they took off my baseball cap shook out one side of blonde curls and the hairdresser wailed "oh what lovely hair!" - I then got a blonde highlighted layered cut that several friends were amazed I looked good with but I piled tons of coloured eyeshadow on everyday so people wouldn't mistake me for a teen boy.

I was 17. those were the days!

Yup, got a very styled short cut when I was 13...it was winter and my Dad refused to let me wash my hair on the Monday morning as I would "catch a chill" so I had to go to school with messed up, bed head hair that made me look like a boy. I kept my hat on waiting for registration, but Darren Smith, the bastard, stole my hat off me and the whole class just pointed and laughed. I was humiliated and have never ever forgotten it. It was a loooooong time growing out as well.

You mean, apart from the time I dyed my hair black using compound henna and the bottom half went green due to leftover perm?

Lucky I was a scuzzy indie kid and dark green hair could be passed off as a choice.

when i was 14 we moved from Canada to south wales for a year
I ventured in to the hairdressers in small town
quite loudly at the receptionists desk I asked if they could do a 'shag'

in canada it was name of trendy layered bob

the whole salon stopped and looked and smirked at me

I was clueless until my friend told melater what a shag was

I came out with a mullet

Yes it's hard to forget the summer of 1984, or as I prefer to call it "Sun-In Summer".

My friend and I got completely addicted to it - my hair went orange and white and very dry - like a pile if grated carrots and straw.

I've just remembered my "tail" too. 12 inches long before they were banned from school and the headmistress would cut it off if caught.

I think the 80's was just a permanent hair nightmare really, looking back.

I got my hair cut short when I was 13 too.. it looked good that cut - slightly less good the next one and very fluffy by the 3rd - at whihc point I started growing it again. It grew out, not down. I could give crystal tips a good run for her money...

Oh yes.

Dyed it purple, with one of those wash out dyes. Except it didn't and it stained my blonde hair and I looked like I had a blue rinse for about 3 weeks. Mam refused to help as she had told me not to do it until she could ask her hairdresser friend about dyes etc and I did it anyway

I also had an incredibly thin fringe that I dried over a large barrel brush and hairsprayed until it didn't move. Now known as the 'coke can fringe' v popular in the mid nineties!

Ah Sun-In! Loved it gently lightning my hair to a flattering honey blonde until I went on holiday, swam in chlorinated water and came back with green hair!

Or a lovely gentle perm "to add body" which turned into tight ringlets which couldn't be straightened as my hair was weak. Spent a year growing it out. Luckily it wasn't at the same time as the Sun In disaster otherwise I'd have looked like Bozo the clown.

Chopsypie the 'tidal wave' fringe was popular at my school. Also early to mid nineties.

Went to hairdressers with the aim of a pixie crop, a la Winona Ryder/Demi Moore in 'Ghost'. Came out with bouffant Gloria Hunniford monstrosity. Cried for weeks...

Had Sun In on my brown hair that looked orange.. so covered it with an all over brown dye.

This was fine until THE DAY OF THE PERM. I didn't think to mention it to the permer, and it wasn't until the next day that my hair gradually assumed an attractive shade of Barbour jacket olive green....

Not my best look!! Had to rush to another hairdresser to have the red put back into it.

The massive 80s perm was a whole other disaster in itself of course

I used to dye mine every colour under the sun - red, purple, streaks of orange, teal, whatever - and it was all fine until I dyed it black. OMG I have never looked so bad in my life. My hair's dark brown naturally so I didn't think it would be a big leap. It really really was. Realised at that point that a lifetime of wearing black and looking chic in it probably didn't lie ahead..

Sorry - I had to mention this - following WallyBanters mentioning the 'tails', I actually saw a young boy (aged about 7) the other day with one!! I couldn't believe it - it looked awful!!! A tiny little plait about 4 inches long!!

For me it wasn't my hair, it was my sister's... That I cut... I couldn't get the fringe right so I just kept going until it evened up. It was 1/2 inch long by the time I'd finished . She still doesn't forgive me and she's nearly 33 now

Oh Lord yes. And I'm 28, so it wasn't even that long ago so I have no excuse.

My hair is naturally dark brown. At 16, I had the most hideous blonde highlights you can imagine. They were very cheap.

At 18, I had a free haircut at Vidal Sassoon. I let the guy go wild, and he dyed my hair black, cut it into a bowl and left one long part at the side which he permed, bleached and dyed red. It was like a prawn hanging out of an upturned dog's bowl.

At art school, I just chopped bits out of my own hair and it looked awful. I used to put Spray Mount in it to make it spikey. My tutor used to go mental if she saw me smoking when I'd just been freshly Spray Mounted. She thought I'd go on fire.

A bit later, I decided to bleach my own hair. It looked awful, so I put a hat over it, went to Morrison's and bought some dark brown dye, which came out the fakest black you will ever see.

Not long after, I thought I'd give myself a home perm. It didn't really work, and I ended up with string little black coils, looking like Peter Andre in 1996.

Since those days, my hair has not had a drop of dye put through it. It's long, brown, curly as nature intended. I would never mess with it again.

Went through a Goth stage and dyed my hair black and purple - they bleached sections and then I'd put the purple dye over the whole lot and the bits that weren't bleached came out black.
Every time I did it, I stained the bath, the sink and everything my head came into contact with ended up purple for weeks. Awful.

When I was mid-teens I used to use wash'n'go shampoo colour sachets. Not really a disaster as such, but still - burgundy hair? All the rage then, pretty cringe-worthy now.

And yes - wet look gel, and hairspray and mousse that left your hair rock hard. I feel quite nostalgic about how awful those gels and mousses were (and how sophisticated we thought they were).

Slight diversion - but anyone remember Body Shop Japanese Washing Grains? Made from ground up aduki beans (and several parts of coarse sand). Took at least 2 layers of skin off. Now THAT is exfoliating!

Went to local Peter Mark's (in Ireland) with hair shoulder length, blunt cut at the bottom, parted at one side. Asked for layers but same basic length, maybe an inch off for split ends, and a fringe.

Ended up with a short and really bad mullet even as mullets go. I looked like a boy who had lost a fight with a lawnmower. I was so distraught I didn't want to go to school for weeks.

God yes, hideous sort of mullet do with a central parting and my hair puffed up at least five inches on the top of my head. Looked like a hat. My mother had insisted I go to a salon to get my split ends sorted out. She couldn't stop sniggering when she saw what the outcome was. I was desperately upset for weeks.

Wanted this. Got this and the pissed off expression too.

As a teenager in the seventies-what do you think? The time (pre punk) I used too much magic silver white and my hair went purple. Perms. Oh god. The eighties and my black adder bowl cut. Then on the morning of my graduation I thought I needed to touch up my roots. I had an Annie Lennox crop, so what roots? I was always questing fir white hair (wait 30 years) so got the blondy est blonde possible. It went purple again. I went to hairdressers and had to have a number 3. my mother cried.
