A bit of a strange one, this...

Right, this is probably the strangest thing ever posted in S&B.

I'm learning to figure skate, and in April my rink is holding an in house competition. I've lost 2 stone already, hoping it's closer to 3.5 by April. I want to wear a proper skating dress for this competition, but I'm not sure on colours/fabrics.

I've attached images of the ones I'm thinking about - the purple crushed velvet is the one I'm going to get when I've 100% finished losing weight (could be around the 5 stone lost mark).

The others are all lycra and I'm just not sure what sort of colour to go for - I want something that will look nice, but will also "pop" with colour when I'm out on the ice.

Also, does anyone know if you can fix crystals to lycra? I'd quite like to add a little bling...

Help?

The dark pink is nice. You can buy a hot fix gun and crystals to add or eBay do iron on crystal designs do would depend if your costume could be ironed or not.

Well done on the weight loss and new hobby and good luck in the competition.

Yes I quite like the dark pink - the purple one is going to be a present from my mum when I reach my target weight :)

I used to skate as a child, and had a kingfisher dress - I'm very tempted to go for that this time, as a sort of "picking up where I left off" thing - to be honest, I like ALL of them, that's the problem! Grin

Hmm, another point - which is more forgiving, velvet or lycra? I suspect I am going to have a shock whichever fabric I choose, but which will be the least horrible shock? :)

I love the blue/turquoise ones, the 1 on the last image with the keyhole at back of the neck is nice too.

As for gluing on diamantes, Ive never used a hot fix gun, so i dont know but for lycra you have to use the right glue to allow is to flex, otherwise the patch of diamantes will stay stiff and go into a weird shape or just fall of when stretched a bit to put it on. What you need if the hot fix isnt for lycra is called flexi glue and can be bought in john lewis, or ebay.

As for forgiving i think the velvet is definately more forgiving Smile

well done on your weight loss too!

I've ordered the blue one from the final image, after consulting with a local dance shop who stock that brand of dancewear, but not the skatewear sadly.

The lady in there advised me on which size to get, and I asked around about the best colour for me, as I'm a bit rubbish at knowing what I look OK in, and everyone I asked, said the blue.

Can't wait for it to arrive. The purple velvet one is going to be ordered when I've shifted all this weight, as the sizing is apparently small in this brand and the velvet might be quite snug.
