There was an article in last Saturday's Times magazine re Boyfriend Jeans ... has anyone seen them, tried them on, got them? Good buy for a flabby tum or bad buy?

Suddenly, the skinny jeans that many young women have starved themselves into are no longer the hippest, most must-have thing in denim-dom. The hot shape of the moment is the slouchy ?boyfriend? jean, so called because its loose, baggy structure makes it look like you borrowed them from the man in your life. As well as Superfine?s, you will find boyfriend jeans by Levi?s, Paper Denim & Cloth and Gap. The death of skinny denim is good news for women with thighs. The boyfriend is much less demanding than the drainpipe and can be very flattering. Wear a long, wide-legged pair with heels, for instance, and you will create a flattering, elongated silhouette, but getting the baggy look right still requires thought. Choose a pair that looks good on your bum. For instance, Superfine?s might be loose, but they also make the posterior look perky. ?Don?t wear them with a long cardie like you did with skinny jeans. Balance out the volume of the legs with something shorter and more fitted on top,? says the Superfine designer, Flora Evans.

oh no, even if model-like, no one can get away with these if they're over 25, IMO. Tried some Gap ones on, even tho I'm quite skinny & tall, still looked bloody awful - really like I was trying too hard to be hip, and they look so scruffy FFS. Women, know your limits!

southeastastra · 03/08/2006 17:34

they sound like the cargo type or skater jeans that were in about 6 years ago, i've still got them, fashion changes so much

FrannyandZooey · 03/08/2006 18:59

Well I am 34 and I look bloody great in mine.

Cod what shoes did you wear today though? Or in the autumn? I have read you saying you don't wear trainers, or ballet pumps. Do you swaddle your feet in strips of hemp or similar?

kelly1978 · 03/08/2006 19:07

i'm 28. I think the key is that everything else has to be perfect. You can't wear them with messy hair and chipped nails or there is a risk of lookign like a grunger.

Flamesparrow · 03/08/2006 19:14

So... am I right in thinking that the big jeans I have favoured for years are actually in fashion and it will be easier for me to buy them now?

merrily · 03/08/2006 19:27

Me too flamesparrow - I have managed to ride out the trend for skinny jeans and it has all come full circle. I'm 30 and my flabby tum and tree-trunk thighs look great in my Carhartts and Gap Worker jeans (from the Men's section). Fitted t-shirt/vest essential obviously.

kelly1978 · 03/08/2006 19:28

I n ever did the skinny jean thing neither, blooduy horrble.

alfiescoops · 03/08/2006 19:39

No boyfriend jeans after 25... ouch. I've been loving my lightweight Gap pair for months. Paired with a slim-fitting white shirt and strappy espadrille wedges they even elicited a "you don't look as if you'd just had a baby"... worth every penny

Flamesparrow · 03/08/2006 19:53

I've never minded the grungey look, so not so much of an issue here (I'm used to the oooh no! cries on MN so don't bother, I'm too tired), but since my normal tops are vesty type ones anyway, they are normally fairly fitted.

Oooh, and I'm 25 so does that mean I'm past it, or ok for another 6 months?

Got a great pair post preg in a 16 and a 14... 14 now falling off me, and I miss them I think a jeans shopping trip is coming on... I have nicked a load of Psychomum's, but a brand new pair all of mine own to celebrate weight loss seems fair.

theflumpsmum · 03/08/2006 20:24

Never been one for skinny fit jeans myself, the skinniest I'd do are bootleg jeans lol,so its good to know baggys are back in style.
Took a visit to local Primark today and theyve got their own version there,I think they were £12.I did try a pair on very nice ,slouchy and comfy but unfortunatley too blue/light denim for me,im a strictly dark blue denim girl.Probably worth a look tho.
Im wearing mine at the mo with little fitted vests(sometimes two layered) and flipflops or if its wet my dunlops.

paddingtonbear1 · 03/08/2006 22:59

Oops, well I am 38 and love the boyfriend style! I think mine look OK. Much better style than the skinny jeans - with my hips and thighs I just didn't go there!

ocd · 04/08/2006 08:17

yeo misschief sorry but you have made no friends here - maybe they dont suit very slim peopele ( snigger)

i got a 12 ratehr than a 14 in gpa so they fit my arse as they said int he artice;i am always borderline 12/14

yes i wore floip flops yesterday - why was it cold near you?
may have a look at trainers today when i gos hopping

FrannyandZooey · 04/08/2006 13:04

Yes is freezing here, just right for boyf jeans - however wore mine with shorter top today and realised have muffin top (have been eating crap for about 2 months)

FrannyandZooey · 04/08/2006 13:05

Yes I am NOT a 26 in waist but that size fits me in the boyf jeans because they are so quite low slung and I have no arse at all.

psychomum5 · 04/08/2006 13:13

[sob].....have shrunk out of my 'boyfriend' style jeans (got mine from next), and so flamesparrow inherited them.....(for her, for me).

have got some smaller ones, but they ain't the same....am guessing my jeans obsession is going to be have to be given into again......

jeans pair #23 is going to have to be bought!!!!

(was more.....flame stoleded 6 pairs which led to a panic attack.....!!!)

kelly1978 · 04/08/2006 19:05

I got soem gorgeous black clumpy ankle boots from tkmaxx today. They were in the mens section, but they've got an effect of flowers painted on them. Too girly for men. Look slightly like doc martins but the painting looks more like real painting rather than printing iykwim. They look great with black boyfriend jeans.

ocd · 04/08/2006 19:16

kelly
i tried em
got a 12 - am a 12/14

loved them with.......................t eh leaopard print ballet shoes in there

kelly1978 · 05/08/2006 08:40

the fish is wearing ballet pumps - at last!!

mine came up big too, I think they are just supposed to. I was tempted to get a size smaller, but thought sod it. I have fitted jeans for when I want to wear fitted jeans.

I was reading that skinny jeans aren't going out yet, and coloured jeans are big atm, I thought that one had passed by quietly. Coloured jeans are vile! I can remember wearing red ones in the 80s or 90s.

Northerner · 05/08/2006 08:48

I love my BF jeans. Have 2 pairs. Makes sucha change from the boot cut styles that have been around for years.

Actualy wore my skinny jeans last night with gold high heels and gold bag. How 1980's is that?!
