Plaiting hair in 40's Yes or No?

Fletcherl · 15/01/2014 19:16

I am growing my fine hair out. Eventually I want a ponytail as I do a lot of sport. At the moment it is between not long enough to all go back but could be plaited/ clipped. What to you think?

mmmm...no. sorry.

AndIFeedEmGunpowder · 15/01/2014 19:19

Single French plait yes! (I think they are due a renaissance) Two plaits nooo.

WhoNickedMyName · 15/01/2014 19:21

For doing sport - fine, whatever keeps it out of the way.

Any other time - absolutely no.

Fletcherl · 15/01/2014 19:27

My hair needs something to keep it out the way. What about mini plaits into clips? Does anyone have another suggestion please? Sorry clueless.

Def not pigtails, Im 23 and wouldnt have that.

I currently have a side plait though (only as it desperately needs a wash!) maybe that would work?

Fletcherl · 15/01/2014 19:31

Am I describing correctly. Like this.

stillenacht · 15/01/2014 19:35

I am 40 and have just plaited my hair in bunches (not to go out though).. I love itGrin Instantly feel 8!Smile

Fletcherl · 15/01/2014 19:42

stillennacht that sounds great.
Should have said I also wear glasses. I sound a fright but still like to exercise and need something for my hair!

What then a hairband doesn't work with glasses.

it really depends upon your entire look, especially if you make really loose, sort of shabby braids that will look quite nice, i think.

I am 39 and occasionally do this, but it works well only on some days, not others....i fully intend to do it when much older and grey. When I'm not sporting my silvery chignon..

sighbynight · 15/01/2014 20:11

I'm in my 40s. I do a single thick plait for practical reasons. Never two! It looks ok, particularly to the side. I also wear glasses and it is much more practical than a hairband. I'd love to be able to fishbone plait it, but, beyond fiddly.

MinesAPintOfTea · 15/01/2014 20:18

Try our done different hairbands. Or a few pins to hold it back.

A plait can work, but you have to be very elegant and slightly eccentric and it has to be most of the way down your back.

FergusSingsTheBlues · 15/01/2014 20:19

I'm 39, my hairs bra strap length....I do plait mine sometimes in one low plait but mainly high ponytails or buns are the way I go, they lift your face a bit more.

madmomma · 15/01/2014 20:35

No.

dexter73 · 15/01/2014 20:43

Do people really worry that much about what other peoples hair looks like when they are doing sports? As long as it is out of your face why does it matter?

Starballbunny · 15/01/2014 20:48

You miserable lot are tempting me to put side plaits in mine and tomorrow and I'm 46.

Not pigtails, my 12yo says 8 is the maximum for pigtails.

madmomma · 15/01/2014 20:49

I doubt anyone worries, but OP asked what people think so she's got a few different opinions.

dexter73 · 15/01/2014 20:51

She is also asking for suggestions as to what to do with her hair to keep it out of the way while she is exercising.

Mintyy · 15/01/2014 20:54

Don't understand how you can have enough hair for a plait but not enough for a pony tail.

Elsiequadrille · 15/01/2014 20:54

I think it's ok (have just looked at your link). A nice loose waterfall plait or similar (not as tricky to do as it looks) keeps hair out of the way nicely.

burnishedsilver · 15/01/2014 20:55

I'm the same age bracket, with long hair. For exercise anything goes but otherwise no. I've just about managed to pull it off in casual summer clothes but I look silly with it in winter clothes. The style in the picture would be lovely in a little girl.

MoreSkyThanWeNeed · 15/01/2014 20:56

I love a crown braid -looks so pretty, but takes a bit of practice.

However you do your hair, wear with confidence and you'll look great.

kaizen · 15/01/2014 20:59

If it's for sport, French plait fits under my swim hat nicely and for the gym too, my hair stays nicely matted together with sweat and a bit of chlorine in case I don't want to mess with it after and wash my hair several times a day Grin For cycling, a helmet fits well onto two plaits. Job done and I'm 44. Running - tight ponytail or two plaits as I don't want anything coming loose or on the back of my neck. Tbh, it's functional and I couldn't give a fuck what people think or what it looks like Grin
