Smart dress please! Which high street shops for tall dresses!

Hi. Please don't say topshop as they don't do anything smart. Only casual. Next tall isn't available where I am. So it's just high street shops. Think workwear. Ideally smart long sleeved dress in grey or black to reach my knee but to suit me who is 6 foot.

I am open minded about colour but it should be a serious colour. Berry or navy is fine. Must be a structured dress. I am in my 30s but it's ok if it looks more 'mature.' Where do I go? Wallis? HOF? Debenhams? Normal dresses are always always too short or else the split goes right up to my bottom. Thanks!!!!! Need it quick or would go online

Check how much fabric is in the hem before you dismiss something as being too short. I have recently had the hem let down and a false hem added to a dress from next and a skirt from oasis . They turned out really well.

burnishedsilver · 15/01/2014 14:20

I should a add, I needed the dress in a hurry and the alterations place did it for me in an hour.

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 15/01/2014 14:22

Hi! That's really good advice. Have just been to HOF and got a classic dress in Hobbs.

I'd expect hobbs to have at least an extra inch in the hem :-)

Moggy72 · 15/01/2014 14:31

Bought some lovely dresses in the whistles sale. Smart patterned dresses. They are 70 per cent off right now. I am 5ft 7 though.

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 15/01/2014 15:25

Hmm I will take a look at the hem. I'm sure you're right. It's a size 12, not too tight (so respectable) yet fitted. The sleeves are not amazingly long. Possibly I could lengthen those? :-)

Silver what about the split at the back? Have the things you got altered got a split in the back?

Ps it was the Hobbs Teresa dress (and it really is the Mother Teresa look) ;-)

Hmm a zip on the wrist so alterations probably not a good idea. It just sits where my hand begins. I might just wear a bangle.

Phase 8 is good for work, long sleeves, tall women and 'mature' styles! It's my new most favourite shop ever.

aoife24 · 15/01/2014 20:05

I'd say Hobbs too. I'm your height and they're a good length on me. They're also smart and god for work.

Longleggedlovely · 15/01/2014 20:08

I've always found matalan dresses to be a great length and I'm 6ft too

cls77 · 15/01/2014 20:12

Long tall sally?

burnishedsilver · 15/01/2014 21:09

Now that you mention it, neither of those items had a slit. Theres no harm in taking it to an alterations place and asking what they can do and how much they'd charge.

aoife24 · 15/01/2014 21:24

In my experience Long Tall Sally is the home of frump, just ghastly stuff. I'm amazed it didn't go out of business years ago

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 15/01/2014 22:13

Yes it's true that any time I have looked at LongTallSally it has been a revelation. However I think TallGirls is related to LTS and some of their stuff looks nice online!

Re: the Hobbs dress- it's fine as it is. The only small prob was the sleeves not quite as long as I would prefer but seeing as there's a zip in sleeves, best left alone but I will wear a bangle so that my wrists don't both feel bare :-)

Phase Eight and Matalan will def go on my lists for checking out. Boden do longer lengths but no stores near me. What are your experiences of Boden stuff especially dresses?

cls77 · 15/01/2014 22:55

Long tall Sally are definately less frumpy than they used to be, and the new seasons things are really nice at the mo. I have always found Tallgirls to be more expensive than LTS although they're not cheap either!!

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 16/01/2014 00:15

Mmm the new season is definitely nicer you're right. Funny isn't it that the new collection includes an Aztec tube skirt though! :-) Oh! An Aztec tube skirt! Very 2014! ;-)

That's my fave work dress at the moment, I wear with a red shirt/white shirt or a teal round neck cardi

NewBeginningsSnoopy · 16/01/2014 19:36

I actually like this one as I love shift dresses. Well I would like it without the zips. [unbearably fussy. I know.]
