What to wear for afternoon tea at the ritz

Smart -not jeans - but not overstated or try-hard, I'd say.
Perhaps a simple dress - eg, in jersey - with nice but not flash accessories, necklace, etc.

Having been around Fortnum's at tea time , I think the only people who really stuck out in a bad way were those very obviously 'dressed up to the nines'.

At the Wolseley, again I think the most stylish women there at tea have the understated chic look often associated with urban French or Italian women.

Given you'll be shopping, flat/flattish ankle or knee boots - good quality and/or well polished - would be very appropriate.

I wore a jersey dress and knee high boots. It fitted well with the general "uniform" of the other women there

If you have a male companion, he'll need to be in jacket and tie if you're in certain areas. Palm Court, I think, but not the Rivoli Bar... check the website, I think it says

Last time I was there I wore a black latex catsuit, thigh high spike heeled boots and a studded collar. Less is always more I always find.

Gorgeous occasion. I would wear a pretty tea/day dress with flat boots. A little Mulberry Lily bag would be a cute touch if you happen to have one.

A formal dress code is upheld in The Palm Court and during lunch and dinner service in The Ritz Restaurant. In these areas gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and tie whilst jeans are not permitted. In all other areas of the Hotel, including The Rivoli Bar and during breakfast service in The Ritz Restaurant gentlemen are not required to wear a jacket and tie, and may also wear jeans. However, trainers and sportswear are not permitted in any public area of the Hotel.

After all that, you may well not even have a male companion. Oh well.

Well it was just afternoon tea after all :) there's nothing worse than being overdressed.
