I don't know if this is still an option, but when I was in a similar position 20 years ago, I rented a dress for the day. It was a lovely dress, actually, and I was sorry to give it back, but it didn't seem worth buying one. Mind you, that was before Ebay, Primark etc and clothes cost a lot more. God, I feel very old reminiscing like that!

I hope you can find something nice!

Chopsypie · 13/01/2014 16:48

H&m do some nice maternity dresses if you don't want to spend a lot.
I also got some nice bits from red herring

whereisshe · 13/01/2014 16:51

You can get lots of lovely "worn once" maternity party dresses on eBay. Brands like Picchu, Tiffany Rose etc.

GwenStacy · 13/01/2014 16:51

I got a lovely dress from ASOS when i went to a wedding heavily pregnant, was about £30 :)

If you want something swankier, you could hire one? www.hireexpectations.co.uk

WhatWouldCaitlinDo · 13/01/2014 17:47

You don't have to get a super glamorous dress, you can get a more "normal" dress and glam it up with a nice bag, jewellery, shoes, etc.

Agreed re: ASOS. Order a pile of stuff, try it all on at home. Some of the quality isn't great.

Tiffany Rose stuff is LOVELY (the lacy dresses, not the fit & flare stuff, that will make you look fat), but expensive so the ebay/hire option could be quite sensible.

Also Seraphine have a sale on - I found their stuff good as I was slim too apart from bump.

bebbeau · 13/01/2014 17:51

thanks all

ideally i want one that doesn't make me look fat, and makes the bump look neater ...hmmm does such a thing exist?

have checked out h+m at the weekend and tbh )not sure if its just my local branch) but it was mostly frumpy and at best, casual stuff

will check out the other places as well, thank you

keep em coming if poss!!

I'd get a wrap dress from isabella oliver, which you can wear when not pg too.

Something like this with a wide brimmed hat would work well.

tethersend · 13/01/2014 18:11

Or this

BikeRunSki · 13/01/2014 18:14

something like this and some statement jewelry, all wrapped up in a pashmina and a floppy hat.

Irishmammybread · 13/01/2014 18:15

Have you looked at Isabella Oliver online? They have some good reductions in sale!

Irishmammybread · 13/01/2014 18:16

crossed posts with tethersend!

ShoeJunkie · 13/01/2014 18:16

I got a nice dress from H & M for a wedding when I was pregnant with DS. Didn't break the bank either.

Kerrie34 · 13/01/2014 18:19

I second the renting a dress, I did that for a friend's wedding while pregnant and got loads of compliments on my swank designer dress! Definitely worth doing if you only have one smart thing to go to (as opposed to several weddings in one summer, for example) as it works out cheaper than buying one. I got mine from Hire Expectations - www.hireexpectations.co.uk - they were really good and post out two sizes so you can make sure it's right, and then you just send it back afterwards.

Alternatively, have you seen the dresses you can wear many different ways? They're not maternity so you could wear it afterwards, but are totally bump friendly. This kind of thing: www.notonthehighstreet.com/inoneclothing/product/multiway-knee-length-dress-navy

HandragsNGladbags · 13/01/2014 19:13

Red Herring

I bought this for Christmas and it is the only flattering item of maternity wear I have ever owned - and I am in baby number 3! Very slimming and a lovely shape to your bump.

madamecake · 13/01/2014 19:41

I had this dress from seraphine in navy when I was pregnant and it's very flattering. Also looks good when not pregnant too.

Kerrie34 · 13/01/2014 20:20

I opted for a kitten heel also quiz but put flats in my bag(by about 7 they were a relief. a poncho is great as it hides bump & outfit still looks good x

ProjectGainsborough · 14/01/2014 09:27

Apologies for the scummy link but I was quite tempted by these when I was pg. And you would get years out of it...

bebbeau · 14/01/2014 10:28

ohhhhh that seraphine is gorgeous - and not too expensive

awww thanks for all the fab ideas ladies

i had been dreading it but now i might actually manage to look ok!

Ooh madame, I had that dress in navy too, I wore it to a wedding when I was 38 weeks! I had the short sleeved version though, wore it with some gold heels and a cream shrug.
