teenage boys - what to wear to a wedding

The family has been invited to a wedding in February at a country house hotel - wedding is at 2 and I think there is also an evening do, although it's not clear on the invitation.

I was just wondering what would be appropriate for the ds's - 12 and 15 - to wear. DS2 has quite a smart dark blue suit (if it still fits); but DS1 only has a black-tie suit - but the invite does not say it is black tie, so I am guessing he would be overdressed in that. I am not mad keen to splash out on another suit for him though - anyone got any thoughts/useful advice?

Many thanks.

At that age smart suits, but not black tie.

Sorry not the news you wanted to hear! They can be hired? Though I don't know if that would work out cheaper or not?

Perhaps look for a black jacket and nice shirt that goes with school trousers if they are smart enough?

Blazer & charcoal grey trousers? Smart pale blue shirt & smart trousers? Is he yr 10 or 11? What are the school rules for wearing suits (some let boys wear suits once they turn 16) could you buy him a Zara suit?

MyNameIsKenAdams · 11/01/2014 16:54

Blazer and smart trousers. Possibly waistcoat underneath so they can de-blazer inside and still look smart. Plain white shirts, skinny tie from topman.

invicta · 11/01/2014 16:54

Smart chinos, shirt, and possibly tie.

Primark have some decent suits sold in separates.

KnockMeDown · 11/01/2014 16:57

If DS1's suit does not still fit him, would it fit DS2? That would help a little?

Merguez · 11/01/2014 16:58

He is Year 10 - and he will be allowed to wear a suit at school but not until yr 12, when it won't fit any more …

But some good suggestions here, will look at Zara.

He has got some quite cool red trousers which he loves - I was wondering if he could wear those with a more formal jacket and shirt, no tie. M&S seem to do quite good jackets.

Will look at Zara too, good idea.

It is not a 'posh' wedding, IYSWIM ...

It's the younger one who has got the dark blue suit already!

what Invicta said - no need for suits these days

Merguez · 11/01/2014 17:01

I have not been to a wedding for years, so not at all sure what's expected these days.

Cool red trousers sound good, Zara stuff is good if they are tall & not too bulky. My DS's friend who is bulkier (½ German, tall & size 13 shoes at 14) fits Primark Chinos really well. Ties are almost completely for over any age apart from as school uniform from what I can see.

If I were getting married I'd rather have happy teenage boys at the ceremony/reception than grumpy ones because they had to wear clothes they didn't like.

scarlet76 · 11/01/2014 17:16

I like the sound of the cool red trousers. Maybe with a more fitted style shirt and a knitted tie.

Took son age 10 to a wedding in the summer. He wore a navy suit with a fitted pale blue shirt from the John Lewis Kin range for boys. He wore red converse to keep the look cool and young. They were much admired by many guests!!

Merguez · 11/01/2014 17:18

He is very skinny and small for his age so I hope he can just fit into the top end of kids' ranges at M&S and JL (cheaper!).

Had not even thought about shoes - suppose I will have to buy those as well as all they have are school black shoes or scruffy trainers.

Slim fit/skinny suits with slim fit shirts. But more on trend for teenage boys rather than a traditional fitting suit.

Eastpoint · 11/01/2014 17:22

Zara kids come up long & fit skinny boys (my son is 14, 5'1" & 35kg) he wears their 10-11 trousers as if you have no spare weight everything just hangs. Can you get him a pair of Vans he'll be able to wear after the wedding at the weekend?

WhoNickedMyName · 11/01/2014 17:27

Have a look on eBay. I sold my DS suit on there, it was only worn once for 3 hours and the person that bought it got a bargain!

MyNameIsKenAdams · 11/01/2014 17:43

Controversial but I always think converse look brilliant with a suit, especially at that age.

BellaVita · 11/01/2014 17:43

I would use the black school shoes, however at christmas when we went our for lunch, DS1 wore his Comverse suede baseball boots with his suit...

Merguez · 11/01/2014 17:51

I like Converse too - and dh is in US at moment so could get some cheap. And then they would wear them afterwards.

Just tried ds2's suit on and trousers just still fit - if I got red converses to go with navy suit, does he need a tie as well?
