I want to do a DIY hair-colour but I'm a complete novice and don't know which one to get!

I have just had my hair cut into a pixie style so figure now might be the best time to experiment as it can grow out quickly if disaster strikes!

It will have to be a DIY colour as I cant affird to have it done in a salon but I have NO idea how to go about doing it and no idea where even to find out.

How do I choose a colour? Will a blonde shade work if my hair is currently chestnut brown or will it go orange? Can I put highlights in? Or even just a streak?

Please help a very clueless person!

Just get something temporary at first. I have mid to dark brown hair and use clairol golden brown. It's easy to apply and lasts about ten washes. It makes my hair really glossy and subtly changes the colour.

Oops it's dark golden blonde not golden brown

my best advice is to always always choose a colour that's at least one shade lighter than what you want to achieve. Yes, blonde dyes probably will turn your hair orange/ginger. To get it really blonde, you have to use proper bleach to lift the colour and even then you risk ending up with a ginger halo!
