I am quite fat ( well size 16) and cullottes are not a good look on me.

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2006 15:23

Suppose it depends on how good your legs and ankles are.

WelshBoris · 25/07/2006 15:23

better than fat ladies and white trousers

brimfull · 25/07/2006 15:23

I think you need to be tall with long legs to beable to pull off culottes.

expatinscotland · 25/07/2006 15:24

i'm a size 12 but only 5ft., 3in. and they look like hell on me.

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:25

you can be as rude as you like wb... but i am... ahem... large and my white linen trousers look fab.

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:26

(but wldnt be seen dead in pair of culottes... black or otherwise)

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2006 15:29

I have some white linen pants but they are not cropped and worn with a carefully chosen kaftannish style longer top.

spidermama · 25/07/2006 15:33

IME culottes are normally arse enhacing even if they are black.

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:37

arse enhancing meaning what exactly.... "looking truly ginormous" sort of enhancing???
twinset you are clearly a woman of grat taste and style.

MrsBadger · 25/07/2006 15:37

[rant ahoy]

why would anyone of any size want to wear culottes anyway?
if you want a skirt wear a skirt, if you can't cope sitting on floor etc in skirt, wear trousers.

besides, culottes are always a funny mid-calf length that flatters no-one.

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:38

hear hear mrs b

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:40

do you take the same (dim) view of a half mast sort of jean?? am toying with the same (toast sale... cropped linen / cotton carpenters jeans)... cant do links for toffee but would welcome a view mrs b (or anyone else except that wb)

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2006 15:44

I always avoid any type of cropped pant as they are deeply unflattering on me, although the heat has forced me to give in and I have bought a pair of Next's boarding trousers that can be cropped. Not the most flattering thing in my wardrobe but ok for walking the dog on the beach or paddling.

Carmenere · 25/07/2006 15:45

The only time culottes look almost alright is in the winter with high heeled long boots, so I think my answer would be no, not at the moment.

WelshBoris · 25/07/2006 15:46

I WAS not being rude

I mean tight white trousers which show off multicoloured thongs underneath

MrsBadger · 25/07/2006 15:47

cropped trousers ok, but (as with boots and skirts) make sure they end at flattering point on calves.
I like mine either 1" below knee or 6" from ankle - anything in between makes my average-ish lower limbs look heffalumpish.

twinsetandpearls · 25/07/2006 15:48

They are nice but I would like a hippo in them. You may be more delicately proportioned than me though!

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 15:50

well it SOUNDED v rude wb
thankyou, v helpful mrs b.. will get tape measure out
not at all sure about that twinset!

WelshBoris · 25/07/2006 15:53

Most things I say sound rude.

Fat ladies and halter neck tops, with all their skin hanging out.Thats a no-no as well

MrsBadger · 25/07/2006 16:06

controlfreaky - measure a skirt that you know is a good length already - what works on me may fail dismally on you...

controlfreaky · 25/07/2006 16:45

it hadnt gone unnoticed wb!
will do mrs b... and thanks.

janeite · 25/07/2006 21:30

I'm 5'2" and a size 12 and I love my cullottes! And they are actually quite flattering if I do say so myself. They do need to be worn with something pretty and fitted on top though.
They are great for work.

mazzystar · 25/07/2006 21:45

Funny you should post this. in town today i saw a LOT of larger ladies (some of really quite large) wearing black cullottes. i even thought to myself something along the lines of they must be doing a lot of them in Evans. Of the 5 different people I saw only one looked really good, but the rest could have looked worse. On the whole I agree they are better as winter wear with high heeled boots.
