Would welcome opinions on this dress. I don't normally shop in Laura Ashley as feel it's a bit 'old' for me, but saw this today in the sale.

I am 30, 5 foot 7, size 6/8 and would be wearing this dress to a friend's winter wedding. I have some high heels that would go perfectly.

Any thoughts?

Link doesn't work.

HyvaPaiva · 30/12/2013 16:30

Really don't like it, sorry. It's too 80s and not in a good way. The neckline and the thinness of the fabric both look very cheap.

There's a very definite line where the two colours join there, and if you are 5'7 I expect it will be in the wrong place - I am 5'7 and most dresses seem to be cut for someone 5'4ish.

You'll definitely need to try it on.

Volume121 · 30/12/2013 16:35

Sorry about the link, thanks for posting one that works. It does look nicer on than on the website..... But if the verdict is no it will have to go back!

Is Laura Ashley a no-no?

OP posts:
Philoslothy · 30/12/2013 16:43

I buy quite few things from Laura Ashley, so it does not have to be a no.

PosyNarker · 30/12/2013 16:52

Sorry OP, I think it's cheap looking and very dated. I wouldn't wear it and we're a similar age (albeit it's a long time since I've been a size 8 Envy).

Volume121 · 30/12/2013 17:08

Thanks for the opinions, appreciate your honesty even if it means I will have to find something else to wear

Anyone else?

janmoomoo · 30/12/2013 20:18

I buy in Laura Ashley and some of their stuff is surprisingly nice.

But I am afraid that one doesn't look very flattering.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 30/12/2013 20:24

It looks too elderly for me, and I'm older than you. Sorry.
I think it's the combination of the mismatched print and the neckline and the long sleeves. Just too conservative. My mum would love it - but I'd have to persuade her away from it because she is 5 ft nothing and that two-tone colour thing would look terrible on her.

Lizzylou · 30/12/2013 20:28

I really don't like it and think for your age and size I would pick something far better. sorry.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 30/12/2013 20:28

PS. Sorry, that was quite harsh Blush - was typing while someone else talked at me.

WhereIsMyHat · 30/12/2013 20:37

I like it, I'm in my late 20s. I'd wear it with some black, preferably suede, pointy stilletos. No tights.

eurochick · 30/12/2013 20:38

I quite like it for a wedding. I think it could look quite chic.

WhereIsMyHat · 30/12/2013 20:38

Hold on, is it navy? If so, definitely not black shoes.

What's your usual style OP? Do you wear vintagey stuff?

ShreddedHoops · 30/12/2013 20:55

I really like it! I have quite a lot of Laura Ashley dresses, I find them excellent quality. I'm size 8 and naturally tarty looking apparently cheers old friend who informed me of this fact so dressing demurely is a good thing for me, makes me feel more confident and expensive looking. What matters is whether you like it and think you could rock it anyway, not what we think. Is it free returns? The height / waist placement issue might be a problem.

blueshoes · 30/12/2013 21:11

For your lovely figure, it lacks oomph but you cannot fault the price. Perhaps with high heels and a big hat, like a satellite.

Volume121 · 30/12/2013 22:05

Thanks for all your opinions.

Those who dislike it - what would you suggest as an alternative?

It is black not navy. The waist does sit in the right place.

I tend to like the demure look for weddings and tend to go for something long sleeves / high neck but I wear killer heels and dresses that are cinched right in at the waist so I like to think I look sexy not frumpy I hope

I would need to take this dress in a couple of inches at the waist to get that effect.

Really in two minds about this address so appreciate all the comments.

Sorry, I don't like it either, and it looks very thin for a winter wedding.

MuttonCadet · 30/12/2013 22:11

What about this one?

RussianBlu · 30/12/2013 22:12

I think its fairly awful.

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 30/12/2013 22:33

OP can you give us some idea of your personal tastes and style - colour, cut, brands, budget, etc? And priorities - sleeves, high/low neck, high/low waistline, high/low hemline, will you wear heels, bag and coat ideas, etc? And the general level of formality of the event?
Sorry for all the questions!

SomewhereBeyondTheSea · 30/12/2013 22:35

Sorry, just saw your recent post Blush

If you like to cinch the waist, how about something like this?
