If I am wearing aubergine cord trousers.......

....what colour top shall I wear if I don't want to wear black. I would usually wear black, but my kids call me ninja(cos I always wear black) plus as I am getting older and my hair colour is getting lighter I don't think I suit it any more (sob). Think I am autumn/winter.

All advice appreciated and welcome.

I wear grey, which works really well with pinky purples (including deep shades like aubergine).

I second grey. Have just bought similar colour skinny combats from Boden sale and planning on wearing with grey slouchy jumper.

I have recently purchased a pair of plum coloured skinny cords and found grey really complemented them (a light grey though)

Would red go? I am rubbish at all this. I only ever wear black with a splash of colour if I am feeling brave. Grey sounds nice plus I have cashmere grey jumper.
Ordering the cords was a bold move for me but now I am panicking thinking what will I wear with them.

I had some aubergine cord trousers which I seem to remember wearing with a bright yellow top....but that was in the 70s so that's probably what not to do.

I recently bought some aubergine cords and a bright blue floral shirt with the aubergine colour in the print.

Grey, yes. Khaki or navy even better. Or mustard yellow! School uniform colours!

I have quite a lot of aubergine. I wear it with other shades of purple, deep pinks, green (medium to dark shades) and teal. I think red would work too.

I sometimes get cross with all the 'am I too old for...?' debates but, in the case of black, I think you may have a point. I certainly found it didn't suit me when I got older - I don't think it's so much your hair colour as a change in skin tone. I just experimented and tried not to worry about making mistakes. Or you can always get your colours done!

If you are autumn black won't suit you. Apparently only winters suit black. I am winter but find black less and less flattering, so I brighten it up with a scarf.

DD(15) wears khaki, grey, navy and most often one of two cream jumpers with that sort of colour jeans.

If you are a Autumn, stick with colours like french navy, forest green, teal, dark chocolate, beige and other warm/yellow based colours.

Aubergine cords are from Lands End - they had sale plus 25% off but it ended yesterday. But if you like them then keep eye out they are always having sales. I am loving their stuff at mo as my wardrobe was missing basic staple items and their prices and quality is very good.
Thnnk I will look at blouses with aubergine colour in the pattern.
I think you are all right about getting my colours done as I think I must be autumn rather than winter as the colours missscatterbrain mentions are all flattering colours on me.
I am so gutted about black not being my friend anymore and have invested in scarfs so soften the colour on me. Not sure if it's hair colour being lighter or skin tone but something is not quite right. Having to rethink my make up as well. - so much money going out the door lately but I am being good and mostly shopping in the sales, and a visit to Florida last week was very timely. Loving being back in cold wet rainy uk - not.

Yes, first though mustard, grey is always good and there's a shade of light, bright green (appley, don't know its name) that looks stunning with dark purple but maybe as a splash - scarf or pattern.

Agree winter and autumn are totally different skin types, so you can't be both or a mid-point.

Op my entire wardrobe used to be black so I feel your pain. I'm not sure why it stops looking right but I think it's to do with it being quite a dramatic colour and therefore very unforgiving. It took me years to kick the habit and starting off with scarves is a good idea. Jewelry softens it too. But, at the risk of repeating myself, just try out different colours and don't worry because, even if they don't turn out to be your best colours, I bet they will still look better than black .
