I'm a similar size and shape to you and I've bought a couple of "fit and flare" dresses, which I think are very flattering on an "apple". The nicest one is from Wallis. It's black with gold dots. When I get on my laptop I will link it for you.

Could you stretch to this with it not needing a cover up? It's a great shape, really well cut and very flattering indeed- aslo in black and royal blue.

Would you be ok with a wedge? these are nice.

Motherofluvlies u are my size and my age and I offer you my sympathies. I have spent all day today looking an outfit for an event I am attending midweek and I can safely say I have never felt so depressed in my life! Why when a person is a size 20plus do clothes manufactures feel the need to only produce polyester frump like rubbish? I wish you well on your search . The best offerings surprisingly were in BHS happy shopping :)

mrs lettuce thank you but I have NO waist so normally wear shift/tunic so although that dress is gorgeous it is not one for me

Have you looked at Billie and blossom dresses from Dorothy Perkins, I am curvy and the fit suits me, there is a blue pencil dress for 25. Don't give up on heels, I found Clark's do some really comfy shoes for 50, I walk all over the place in them as they have a raised front so your toes don't squish.

For my work do I am wearing www.baukjen.com/uk/shop/baukjen/dresses/jersey-drape-dress-ink.htm in black. Love it.

I am 5 foot and size 16 atm and I just went to the big shopping centre and tried on every dress that was in any way vaguely suitable ie bit of a sleeve and covered my knees.
I have always been an apple no matter what my size at the time. To my surprise I ended up with a waisted , A line skirted LBD. It has cap sleeves and a round neck (another surprise). It is made of a lace type cutout material and lined in cream. Not at all what I would have chosen if I had not been determined to try everything on. I did need to take it up from the shoulders though (v.short waisted).
I wore it last night and one other time and I am liking it. I am in Aus but maybe you might find something to suit your weather?
I know its tedious (and depressing!) to try on so many things but if you could spare the time then you might find a hidden gem?

Roshbegosh · 15/12/2013 07:26

I know East is a bit old but have a look, they have some lovely dresses in all sizes.

MovingGal · 15/12/2013 07:28

Oh and also try those shaper undergarments (feels so 1950s saying that!!)
They dont have to be tight but just firm. The slippery material stops the dress from clinging to my jiggly bits (ie back fat etc)
I have some that are like bike shorts that come right up to under my bra. Its good because then I can wear the right fitting bra rather than try to find a shaper with the right bra fitting iyswim.
