Tights and/or shoes for black tie do - I have no idea

Well, not really and/or as I definitely will be wearing shoes! It's just whether I need new ones.

So, I have an old Phase Eight dress I was going to wear. Navy blue, v neck, sleeveless, just above the knee, quite flattering other than arms, but I can't afford be arsed with buying something new. It's an evening do, at a fancy London hotel. Black tie.

But - legs! Feet! First, am extremely pale. Second, legs are definitely not my best feature. I do not have defined ankles. Can I wear opaque tights? If so, what colour? Can't think of anything that would not look weird. If I do, can I wear shoes paler than tights? I.e navy tights with gold shoes? It seems like that would look awful, but I basically have no idea. Are flesh tights just an ultimate no-no? I haven't really worn them since I was forced to when I was a teenager working the checkouts in Waitrose.

Shoes options - dark purple velvet peep toe ones from M&S a few years ago. Not convinced, and they're a bit high and I will probably fall over (although that may well happen anyway as I don't get out much these days). Gold strappy sandals, also from M&S. They're quite muted for gold, I don't really like them, but they're quite inoffensive. Could afford new ones if they were relatively cheap, i.e £40 or under.

What are other, more stylish people doing? Please help!

How about a new pair of navy shoes and some brighter opaque tights in say purple or a brighter blue with a coordinated wrap or statement necklace.
