What shoes/tights with this dress?

I've only just ordered it, so it might not be a keeper.
Navy, lace top, above knee. Sorry I can't link but its Phase Eight Suzy.
Navy shoes & nude tights or black shoes & black opaques?
I'm on the wrong side of 40 & am terrified of looking mutton.
Size 12, OKish legs but a definite tummy and muffin top. Do have control pants though.
Any advice welcome.

Black opaques will look too heavy. Wear black fishnets.

Twinklestein · 01/12/2013 19:38

Link for you

Nice dress!

I don't usually like black & navy mixed, but I think navy shoes may look a bit Kate Middleton.

I wouldn't wear fishnets as it will argue with the lace, but I agree black opaques will be too heavy. I'd go for black sheer & black shoes I think.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/12/2013 19:43

I really like black and navy together. I'd wear black opaques and high black suede ankle or shoe boots with that - and I'd be tempted to stick a black biker jacket over it too.

Are you tall? Phase Eight's version of 'over the knee' is generally pretty long!

Eastwickwitch · 01/12/2013 19:45

Black sheer & black shoes it is then. Thanks so much.
I'm not too old for it am I?

Def not too old, it's very demure.

WhoNickedMyName · 01/12/2013 19:47

I like navy mixed with really bold colours, I'd go for a complete contrast like maroon tights and shoes.

Eastwickwitch · 01/12/2013 19:47

Remus sorry, crossed posts. I'm 5'9" so it will be quite short, 93cm seems about 3" above my knee.

:)

Twinklestein · 01/12/2013 19:50

3 inches is fine!

Eastwickwitch · 01/12/2013 19:55

Twinkle as long as my big sucking in cycling shorts don't show!

I doubt it lol. You could always go for control tights instead...

Ms23 · 01/12/2013 22:08

I think this would look better with nude tights and nude shoes. Not a big fan of navy and black.

mammadiggingdeep · 01/12/2013 22:15

Nice dress...really like it. I hate nude tights, I just think they're 'old ladies' tights. Sorry. Think black would be better but I also think a colour might look ok...grey? I don't know...think it's tough. I have a navy work dress I love but have the same dilemma and never wear it!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/12/2013 18:25

Nude tights and nude shoes would make it rather Kate Middleton, whereas opaques and shoeboots would funk it up a bit. Either could be fine, depending on the look you want.

GirlWithTheDirtyShirt · 02/12/2013 18:31

Agree with Remus. Either black opaques and show boots/ankle boots or nude tights and nude shoes. I could be tempted to try a contrast shoe with nude tights too - coral or green maybe?

Eastwickwitch · 02/12/2013 18:32

Sadly the frock is a no.
The top is very pretty, but the fabric is sort of fine, knitted almost teeshirt material. It shows every lump outline of spanks and is far too short.
For a trim, shorter 10 it would be fab though.
Thank you very much for the advice, all taken onboard for next time.
