Fancy dress party New Year's Eve!

Believe it or not I haven't done fancy dress since I was a teen. I now have a fancy dress party to go to and haven't got a clue where to start. I don't want to look silly, I still want to look attractive (in no way slutty!!), any ideas? Have any of you had success with a particular outfit?

I'm slim & petite if that matters. No bare legs though - too cold and too pale!

Dp and I were the Blues Brothers for our last one - I had a white lace shirt, black blazer, black skinnies, and huge heels plus a trilby and sunglasses. It felt good - comfortable but a bit 'dressy' too.

I'm going a 70's fancy dress party and I'm wearing a sequin mini dress and platform ankle boots with black tights, so I will still look 70's but not wearing an actual costume.

Honestly I would adapt something as Remus did for the Blues Brothers rather than rent or go to a web site.

Do you have suits from job interviews? With a home made FBI badge and water pistols you could be murder and scully for the x files or a tv cop pairs.
