Formal outfit for 12 / 13 year old DS?

DS (yr8) is attending a school formal (don't even get me started on why lower secondary kids should be attending formals).

The letter he has brought home says dress code: formal

What would you put on a 12 year old boy?

He has no suits / jackets / blazers.

Could I get away with nice shirt and trousers (and maybe a tie)?

I'd say a suit would be best really…if you have time you can get a bargain on ebay or try Primark or asda?
