Xmas party tights dilemma

Cucumberscarecrow · 18/11/2013 19:52

I have previously been here to ask if this dress would be okay for my Xmas party worn with opaque tights and animal print shoes.

The dress got a yes vote but the tights / shoes combo a resounding no.

My other option is to ditch the animal print shoes and wear a black suede court. Can I wear opaques or is that too much black?

What about nudes? Some people were suggesting they are acceptable now. Is that true? I am reasonably tall and quite thin but my knees are pretty knobbly. Will a good pair cover up the knobbly bits but without making me look like an orange-legged granny?

Finally, any recommendations? If I knew they'd look right, I'd stretch to Woolfords but am terrified of paying £25 for tights that I don't like.

I have no advice, but am watching what everyone else says as I just got a (purple) dress for my party today which I am planning to wear with black opaque tights and black shoes.

Have you tried it on with the tights/shoes? Without seeing it it's hard, but I'd go with the black shoes if you're worried, I think black shoes and tights is hard to get wrong.

I'm a fan of the 200 denier ones from Accessorize, though they've just started doing 200 denier in lots of places so should be easy to find.

Whack on some St Moritz and risk the bare legs!

dottyaboutstripes · 18/11/2013 23:56

I've just bought some sheer black seamed tights to wear at a Xmas party.

Cucumberscarecrow · 20/11/2013 07:43

Financeprincess, you're obviously made of stronger stuff than me. Definitely not going bare legged. Knees to knobbly and the cold would kill me.

MyNameisSuz, I'm worried that I will just look like a black hole if I'm all in black head to toe. You're okay as you've got a purple dress.

Dotty, I've never worn sheer tights. It's a bit of a leap for me but maybe I should try some on.

I think sheer tights - eg M and S Autograph 5 denier - with animal print shoes would be best. Have worn these successfully to several weddings this year. Almost invisible but smooth out your legs IYSWIM.

All black would be too much IMO. M and S have lots of patterned -eg lace - tights at moment.Have worn similar in past but wonder what others think - are those now a bit naff?

I believe you can wear this dress with black tights, there is nothing wrong with that, I have worn that combo too, plus black wedge shoes so black is never too much, plus you can never go wrong with it ;)

P.S But if you want to put another colour you can always change the shoes with dark purple ones and some accessories of the same colour and it will be perfect! :)

MyNameIsSuz · 20/11/2013 18:03

Cucumber, your dress is red isn't it? The one you linked to is! If the dress is black then maybe not all black, I might go with sheer too. Or be really brave and wear coloured tights!

Cucumberscarecrow · 20/11/2013 19:07

No, Suz my dress is the black version of the red one ineptly linked. I hadn't thought about coloured tights. Not sure though as I have bought a chunky beaded mustard necklace to lift the outfit and think mustard tights might be de trop.

So, Emma, why are purple shoes okay but not animal print Confused?

Poly, thanks for the advice on m&s tights. Might buy and try.

I'd go for black/silver glitter tights and black suede courts. That black dress definitely needs making more 'Party'.

polyhymnia · 20/11/2013 19:32

I think the amber and the animal shoes would go well - and nude tights would be fine.
