Are any cheaper straighteners as good as GHDs?

Probably done to death but I want to chop my hair off but if I do I will need to dry it and straighten it more regularly in which case I will need a new hair dryer (think it'll be a parlux) and new straighteners as I currently have wide plate ghds which which I can't use well when my hair is short.

I want a new pair of ghds but not sure I can afford them and hair dryer so close together so is anything comparable nowadays (I have thick coarse hair so they need to be tough workers). I had seen that cheaper ones seem to have a better spec since I last bought but is it all lies?
