Even after it has just been washed or straight after she has been swimming. If I touch her hair when it is wet my hands smell of damp too.

Have tried a few different shampoos and both blow drying or leaving it to dry naturally. Our house isn't damp and it definitely isn't our towels as noone else has the same problem.

Aww, your poor DD! Have you looked up scalp fungus? (Usually causes dandruff too.)

Maybe an oil problem or fungal infection? I found this, sorry it's a DM link! www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2014492/Have-got-Smelly-Hair-Syndrome.html

Thanks, have just read the article and think that could be it.

One of her friends commented on it today and feel bad that she must be conscious of it, particularly as I keep trying to subtley spray her with leave in conditioner to get rid of it. Think the coal tar shampoo would be a good place to start.

Tea tree shampoo? Or a few drops of tea tree in a cheap bottle of shampoo?
