wash hair or not (before highlights)

I am going to have highlights at lunchtime tomorrow. My hair is full of lots of dry shampoo etc. Should I wash my hair now/tomorrow morning or leave it? I am very sleepy and wondering what to do.

I know it sounds gross but i do t wash my hair for a few days prior to having my roots done that way your natural oils help protect the hair Smile

I would wash it using some clarifying shampoo to take all of the products out of it...I think they can interfere with the dye. I wouldn't wash for a couple of days afterwards though.

I'm a hairdresser, don't wash it. It's so much easier to deal with when it's slightly dirty. HTH

Ahhh ok, go with the hairdresser Grin

Thanks for all this! luckily I fell asleep so didn't manage to wash my hair - slightly concerned that the levels of gunk in their (lovely) are going to mess up my highlights, but anyway I shall be off in an hour (on a rare afternoon off!).

So we shall see ...

It won't, don't worry! I always tell my clients to leave their hair dirty, much more workable. Enjoy your afternoon off Smile

thanks Tess, have been trying to get my highlights done for months so am probably more excited than I should be (hope you hairdressers realise the power you have Smile)

I hope you realise how lovely it is to have a client who genuinely can't wait to have their hair done and enjoy every minute of it. It's so rewarding for us :)

DON'T DO IT!!!!!

I had my only colour disaster last year after a decade of highlighting. Went to my salon full of lovely Klorane dry shampoo....and the foils 'bled' all over my scalp. I literally had circles and square patches of orange. Nobody could believe it. The next 'fix' visit to correct it then use a toner gave me a copper head.
It took me three more visits and 8 months to have highlighted blonde hair again. I would never put colour on dry shampoo again.

Vintagebeads · 05/11/2013 12:59

Your highlights bleeding had nothing to do with dry shampoo.
Bleeding happens by the product coming out of the foil. This is the mistake of the stylist they were either put too close to the scalp and the tint expanding/or were rushed putting in...unless you scratched your head alot or something.
The colour you ended up with also is your hairdressers ..not dry shampoo!

Just to report that it all went fine and the colour has turned out well: hairdresser was pleased I hadn't washed it as it would be very slippery to put into foils. Sorry to hear about your experience ADifferentKindOfMum, hope that all is well now!

Echoing vintage, adifferentkind. Your horrible experience was due to a shitty hairdresser believe me. I've dot foils on dry shampoo thousands of times and nothing like that has ever happened to me or any of the good hairdressers I know.

Glad all went well OP
