Black tie dress for a Christmas party (maternity) hormonal rant included.

Dh has just informed me that he has put our names down for his work Christmas party. Whilst I am happy he thought of me and assumed I wanted to go, like the man he is he didn't think.

I know I'm hormonal and being completely unreasonable in my annoyance of him, so instead of ranting and raving at him I'm taking my annoyance out on here.

I'm going to be around 18 weeks pregnant and it's a black tie event. I have nothing to wear and next to no budget to buy one. He knows we don't have money to throw away and certainly don't have money to spend on an outfit that will only be worn once and never again (last baby and won't have another black tie event before may) it's money that would be better spent on maternity clothes I could actually wear on a day to day basis or bras or baby clothes and essentials like a crib mattress.

Gah, I am so annoyed with him. Anyone have any ideas where I can buy a dress suitable for a black tie event that doesn't make me look like a beached whale that's under £50.

I really don't like eBay I have no trust after being burnt a couple of times so please no eBay options.

What size are you and how big is your bump? There are lots of non maternity stretchy dresses that could be worn again. I have a really nice stretchy strapless dress that looks great pregnant or not.

Asos? They have some that look nice and aren't too expensive. If you found something simple and accessorise it, you could get more wear out of it.

Depending on the size of your bump you could get away with non-maternity, if it's the right shape ie empire line or bodycon if that would suit you.

My sister had to go to a wedding at 8 months pregnant. She hired a gorgeous dress, coat and hat. Is hiring an option?

Matalan maxi dress

I have this even though I am fat, not pregnant and it is incredibly versatile. Not the best quality but you can dress it up with a blingy necklace, some heels and a nice cardy.

Ohh hiring, hasn't thought of that...where can you hire from?

I'm a size 10, and bump is practically non existent however with my 2 previous pregnancies my bump has been massive by 18 weeks so half expecting it to shoot out a any moment.

I'll take a look at Asos and we have at tkmaxx close by, I'll go and take a look at them too.

Thank you so much, my hormonal rage got the better of me and I couldn't think where to go!

I'd go for ASOS- I had a nice black lace maternity dress from them last year. Cheap and I wore it quite a few times.

champagnesupernova2 · 04/11/2013 15:15

Also if you got for a maxi dress made of jersey you may not need to buy maternity at all
Try the brand Zack too?

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 04/11/2013 15:16

Oh oh oh, I have a oasis maxi dress. I could put it with some heals and a statement necklace and it'll look ok?

Will I look too casual tho? Everyone else is going to look gorgeous and non pregnant and I'm just goin to stick out like a sore thumb.

Ahh, I can't wear heals (I forgot for a second) and I'm on a crutch thanks to spd and siatica.

If your dress is long enough you get away with flats?

Also try phase eight. I got a lovely long dress from there in the sale that would still fit me and I'm 33 weeks.
