Tops! Teach me, a seasoned dress-wearer, about tops

Just as I said! I've just gone back to work and have diddly squat to wear in the office. I've spent the autumn and winter of my maternity leave in either a mini skirt, thick tights and boots, or skinny jeans and boots, with these just boring plain old jumpers as I was getting vommed on a lot. It was my first step into the world of separates, necessary because breastfeeding, but I never really got the tops bit right.

Now I'm back at work I'm mostly wearing the same two dresses which still fit me, with boyfriend cardigan, thick tights and boots, but want to also mix in skinny jeans and boots. I have a black pair (which I'd usually wear with ankle-height grey biker boots) and a navy blue pair (usually wear with brown riding boots) which would work. However, the tops I have aren't really dressy enough if you see what I mean, but being someone who doesn't usually do separates I don't really know what to wear. It's quite a young trendy office, my team errs on the side of smart but some people do dress very casually. I'd rather lean towards smart, nothing too slouchy.

So please suggest me some tops I can wear with these jeans, nice enough for office wear but also fashionable. Also, not wanting to make this too difficult, it's air conditioned year round so needs to be something warmish. I keep seeing all these nice chiffon-y tops with cardigans but just wouldn't know what to put them with or how to wear them (e.g., tuck in? leave flapping?)

I'm 29, 5'2" and petite, size 10 but not skinny - I think I have a reasonable figure but am chubby-ish, so not really suited to very tight stuff. I carry my weight around my stomach, boobs and arms.

Help me!!!
