Who looks good in skinnies?

What do you have to do to look good in skinnies? Are they really only for size 10 long legged models? When I'm out and about I see everyone wearing skinnies but very few that look good. Is it about having long thin legs or is it more to do with what you wear with them?

I'm a size 12 with ok legs but skinnies just don't suit me. Is it because I am an apple shape or is it that I wear the wrong tops and shoes? I tend to wear a loose top that covers my bum and I prefer mid calf boots rather than knee high or ankle boots. But I still think I look better in boot cuts.

Any advise- I like the idea of wearing them because I love boots.

In my opinion true skinny jeans suit only skinny people who have small hips and a small bum.

Narrow straight legged jeans which can still have that nice fitted shape are just miles more flattering on nearly everyone else.

Skinheadmermaid · 01/11/2013 12:07

I honestly think anyone can look good in skinny jeans as long as they're not so tight you can see all their bum dimples.
I'm really not a fan of bootcuts and never have been, they just make your ankle look wider, they don't 'balance' out anything!
I have a big bum and i look much slimmer in skinny jeans then anything else. Wear a shorter top that shows your slim leg (doesn't have to be tight) and the jeans will be much more flattering.
Or alternatively try a boyfriend or straight leg?

FoxMulder · 01/11/2013 12:10

Hmm...interesting. I DO have skinny legs, but I avoid skinnies because of my massive feet!

SundaySimmons · 01/11/2013 12:13

I wear them. I am a size ten but I have a round bottom which gives the jeans shape.

I see some slim people with a flatter bottom and the jeans then sag down giving a very unflattering saggy shape.

I like that skinnies give me a pert bottom and are youthful without my looking mutton.

misscph1973 · 01/11/2013 12:15

I used to look good in skinnies, but not anymore, despite weighing less now. I am 176 cm tall and I weight 60 kg (used to weigh 62 kg). I have tiny breasts. It seems that my breast have travelled to my bottom, which is not huge, but definitely bigger.

I guess it's age for me, I turned 40 this year. I do some exercise, but no much in the last few months.

I haven't been able to wear my skinnies for 3 years now, so I seriously considering binning them rather than torture myself.

Grumpywino · 01/11/2013 12:35

I did see a lady who must have been a 16/18 wearing skinnies and a cardi, and she looked amazing. She was stood next to a similarly dressed size 8 who didn't look anywhere near as good. It's not about being thin, it's about the body shape and the cut of the clothes. The larger lady clearly knew what worked for her, while the thinner girl was wearing what she considered fashionable.

thepurplepenguin · 01/11/2013 13:41

Yes I think you need a bum to look good in them. At a size 6 with no bum they were saggy and crap. Now at an athletic size 8 they look much better.

missbopeep · 01/11/2013 13:44

I think you need good ish legs or something to cover them up if you have large thighs. I think they look most unflattering on typical short pear shapes-slim calves but large thighs, hips and large bums so you get the contrast between the bum and the legs.

Ecuador · 01/11/2013 13:44

I'm a size 6 and I wear good quality tight fitting skinnies and I think they look fairly good. Saggy bottom is bad in anything though surely? They need to fit and be of fairly good quality.

I have very slim hips and look quite boyish. Wear them with ballerinas when it's warmish and either short or knee length boots in winter. Weirdly they look much better on me and are more flattering than just slim jeans.

LordPalmerston · 01/11/2013 13:45

me

very long legs

FruitSaladIsNotPudding · 01/11/2013 13:49

I think only people with slim legs and hips look good in them. So not necessarily thin, but certainly not pear shaped. I am a classic pear - even when thin my hips and thighs are big in proportion to the rest of me, so they pretty much always look rubbish. I can look better by wearing long tops etc, but they're never going to flatter me.

likelytoasksillyquestions · 01/11/2013 13:50

Not me (size 10 muscly pear with stumpy legs).

But! Narrow straight legs look ridiculously much better. The Uniqlo ones are brilliant. I was pining for the return of bootcuts until I discovered this.

bishboschone · 01/11/2013 13:54

I think people think too much . I'm 5 ft and size 10 hourglass but I wear them . I may not look like a model but news flash .. I'm not !!! Some days I wear them , some days I wear diesel loose fit, some days I wear leggings , some days I wear tights and dresses ..Neither make me look tall and skinny .. I got being short and curvy a long time ago .

Thants · 01/11/2013 13:56

I think everyone can. I think they look best with long tunic tops and boots but everyone styles them differently. I think anyone of any size can look nice in them, they are just jeans!

abigailtakesthewheel · 01/11/2013 13:56

I love them. They are one of the very few trends that I have ever felt suited me. I will be devastated when skinny jeans are no longer in! I'm small and quite slight, size 8, and have very narrow hips and skinny legs which for the size of me are comparatively long. My tummy is a little wobbly and I don't have much of a waist (I'm basically the shape of a 12 year old boy, with a mummy tummy). Skinny jeans show off my best feature.

pudding25 · 01/11/2013 14:01

I love them. I look so much better in skinnies than any other style. I disagree. Most people I see look good in skinnies.

DesperateHousewife21 · 01/11/2013 14:01

I cant see skinny jeans ever being out of fashion- they look so good with boots and go with everything but trends do move on unfortunately.

Where can I buy skinnies which dont sag on the bum???

Ive heard Primark are v good. Zara ones are disappointing.
Cant afford the mega good £££ though.

rainbowfeet · 01/11/2013 14:03

I am an apple shape & size 16.. I only wear skinny's & think I look ok in them!! I always wear either jeggings or ones with lots of stretch to avoid muffin top. I am lucky enough to have slim legs (shame about the rest of me) Hmm
I always make sure my tummy area (fat flop, as my friend calls it, she has one too) is covered by a loose fitted longish top. I think boot cut makes me look shorter. Smile

MarshaBrady · 01/11/2013 14:03

DesperateHousewife keep an eye on Donna Ida sales etc, I've seen some on there for £30 odd.

I do love skinnies, dark even indigo my favourite. I don't wear long tops. Could never do that, really doesn't suit me at all. Just hip length jumpers etc

I tried on some other types when they became trendy again but just couldn't do it.

Mummyoftheyear · 01/11/2013 14:22

Gd, I wear them. Bet I'm one of those who looks awful. Good thing I've no idea!

LordPalmerston · 01/11/2013 17:21

I dont think tunics over fat arses look nice

ithaka · 01/11/2013 17:39

I love my skinnies. I am tiny, but my legs are slim and toned so it doesn't matter that they are short.

SundaySimmons · 01/11/2013 17:52

Desperate housewife, buy a slim belt.

I hate it when clothes fall down and I now always wear a narrow belt.

I don't have very long legs but agree with the poster that said bootcut make them look even shorter.

itsnothingoriginal · 01/11/2013 19:12

I can't stand them. Love slim fit jeans - I'm a size 8-10 and 5'3 and they just look much nicer on me than any skinny jeans I've tried. Not sure if it's a height thing - obviously tall and long legged women look great in skinny jeans but I think they generally look great in anything Envy

talkingnonsense · 01/11/2013 20:36

Has anyone got any pics of "normal" women looking good in skinnies- size 12/14/16 and 40 kind of thing? I'm just never sure- I can't do the skinnies/ ballet flats thing, on other ways to style them?!
