I want to line my eyelids - please tell me what to buy that works and stays put!

I have small eyelids that you can't really see much of so have never worn much eye make up. I really like the effect of subtly lining the top lid but I just can't seem to find the right product. I've tried kohl pencils but they end up smudging to top eye area.
Tried bourgois pen which did stay put but the black was way too harsh for me. I am after a colour but nothing too dramatic.

Please can anyone recommend something which isn't too pricey? Thanks

How about instead of a pencil, dark eyeshadow applied with a very small brush. That's what I use and the effect is as subtle or as dramatic as want because you can build up the colour. I also find it stays put.

Gel eyeliner is really easy and lasts well. Barbara Daly at tesco do a nice brown one that comes with a brush.
I'm useless with liquid liner but this is really simple to do.

I like the Maybelline gel eyeliner that comes with a brush. It's this one: www.feelunique.com/p/Maybelline-New-York-Eyestudio-Lasting-Drama-Gel-Eyeliner-24h-Intense-Black - I think it comes in brown and purple too.
It lasts very well on my oily lids.

You could also use a powder eyeshadow and a push brush. It looks very natural compared to most other ways of applying liner/kohl IMO. I use this brush: www.maccosmetics.co.uk/product/145/814/Products/Brushes/Eye/212-Flat-Definer-Brush/index.tmpl and any eyeshadow I like.
It's this method:

You can also just use an angled brush with the eyeliner or eyeshadow.

i've just got a smashbox eye pen that is really easy to use it's about £16 but worth it

I used to find this really tricky as I have crepey eyelids so anything that drags (eg a pencil) just makes a horrid mess!
I practiced with lighter brown eyeshadows and a fine lip brush until I felt confident. the quicker the stroke of the brush the better the line. Also, always look down into a mirrir, your eyes open just a little, to position the brush in the right place.
Since I've got the hang of it I now use this Revlon eyeliner in the black briwn which isnt too harsh if your fair. It stays on all day and you can get right into the lash line with it.

felt tip eye liner!
so so so easy!
rimmel has a great one as does 17.

The Bobbi Brown gel liners are good. They will melt if it's a hot sweaty day, but otherwise they stay put pretty well (really well if I can be bothered to use a primer).

alltoomuchrightnow · 28/10/2013 13:54

if you are naturally prone to smudging, or even slightly oily, the B Brown gels won't stay put..they are shocking on me.. No7 do a long lasting liquid one i swear by.. navy blue ( i think its called ocean or sea?) very flattering shade on most skin types i reckon

alltoomuchrightnow · 28/10/2013 13:55

the navy is way more flattering that black..it's quite subtle... black is too harsh on me too

Another vote for the Maybelline gel eyeliner.
Used to get the Bobbi Brown one but always thought it dried out too quickly before I could finish it.
