Home hair colouring kits

I usually get my hair dyed every six weeks at the hairdressers, however, due to the fact that I'm completely skint I will not be able to get my hair done until after Christmas so I'm really thinking about buying a home colouring kit.

My hair is very dark but must be about 30% grey these days, the roots are just looking dreadful, with completely white around my face. I'm only 42 I'm not prepared to embrace the grey just yet.

Are home dye kits any good? I haven't used one in years? I'm thinking they've got to be better than my salt and pepper roots that I've got now.

I have the same problem. Dark hair with alarming grey. I started getting greys in my teens.

I get my roots done at the hairdressers about 4 times per year - when I have foils put in the length too. It costs £150 and the rest of the time, I use Nice & Easy on my roots at home. I only do the roots to avoid that over dyed look you so often see.

I leave it on for about twice as long as the instructions state.

I always do my own. As a first timer I'd go of a semi permenant colour (washes out in 24 washes) and go a shade lighter than you think you want as they always come out darker than you expect. Nice n easy and loreal castings are both good products IMO.

I would be completly grey if I didnt dye my hair and im only just 40. I have to dye every month and I cant justify the time or cost at the hairdressers. I like the foam colours they do now. Nowhere near as messy as the older style dye

John Freida is good, it's a foam one and my mum loves it! :)

I used to use Nice and Easy root touch up in between hairdresser visits. Now I always do it myself with Olia, which is very good.

I get mine from Sallys and use the majorel colours. By far and a way the best I've every used (I'm 42 and v grey now - started when I was 20.) It is the nearest to professional at home and if you go in they give you advice on colours and colour mixing. V easy to do. You have to invest in a colouring brush etc but much cheaper.

Second the John Frieda one. It doesn't have that very 'dyed' look (or smell) and any spills come off your skin easily (even the darker colours). The foam ones are so much better than the older ones.

Usually a tenner, but very often £6.60 in Superdrug or Sainsbury's.

I use nice and easy. works well for me. I do colour my hair every month.

alicia, come back & let us know how you get on! Am contemplating doing my own as can't afford hairdressers every 3 weeks.

Scared of messing it up! Wonder if mousses/foam are easier and less messy on the surroundings!

Another vote for the JF foam one. Everyone always saying how lucky I am not to have to dye my hair!! Ha ha must look natural then!!

I ended up in the same situation as you,Alicia having had mine dyed at the hairdresser for years.

I now use Nice n Easy foam colouring stuff which is great - no mess and no revolting smell of ammonia.

I have shoulder length hair with quite a bit of grey around the temples and on top and one application lasts me for around 8 to 10 weeks.

I don't like the JF one, I use perfect10 by clairol...on,y have to leave it on for 10 mins!

Nice n Easy is really great for stubborn grey hair, I use a dye brush brought from superdrug to apply it to my roots, which helps.. It is much messier doing it from home, but so much cheaper. Just remember to have some cotton wool and cleanser to clean it off your face/ears when applying as it can be tricky to take off if it's been on too long. Oh yeah, and remember to keep your head tilted back when washing it out, I put it forward for like 10 seconds and my eyes hurt after.

Do the home ones stain plastic baths? Worried about my bath!!

doesn't stain my plastic shower tray when I rinse it out of my hair. probably because it rinses straingt down plug hole. It does stain the loo seat if it splashes on there and I haven't noticed straight away.

tip: apply a thin layer of vaseline round your hairline, back of neck and on ears. Any dribbles will then be caught by the vaseline and will just wipe off without staining

My hair is very dark and is course hair the olio one is great also nutrisse depends on lenghth you may need two boxes skimping just doesn't pay off and you end up needing to do again .

Olia every time. I was in a hurry and used Perfect 10 in July and it really frazzled the ends of my hair. Olia leaves it so soft and conditioned. It does feel very different though, a bit claggy. It also feels as though it won't cover your hair, but it does. Mine is just below shoulder length and one lot is enough.

I used the olia in the end. Is okay grey is all covered. The bottle kept slipping out of my hands so the bathroom looked like a bloodbath by the time I'd finished.

Bit late now but please do a patch test first if you're using a permanent dye.

I also cover in cling film and heat it up with the hairdryer when it's on.

Nice n easy is brilliant on greys.

i have similar hair to you, i use Belle Colour, find it good coverage and don't have bad reactions to it. hth
