Boden British Tweed Kilt in Coral Windowpane - what to wear with such a brightly coloured skirt?

SmokyHeart · 24/10/2013 20:02

Over the last few days I have been stalking Boden's tweed kilt in the coral windowpane colour as it was sold out in my size, and have just managed to order one that came back in stock. I absolutely love the colour - but I have no idea what to wear with it.

Any suggestions - what colours do you think would work with it? And if you have it already, what do you wear with it?

Do you think a khaki top would go with it? Maybe dark grey or a dark purple.

LeoandBoosmum · 24/10/2013 20:14

I was going to suggest navy too! Grin
Charcoal would be okay.
Deep purple-mauve to pick up on the purple in the skirt.
Cream.
Plum.
Maybe even some shades of olive...even bottle green could look nice.
Black...
There's actually a lot that could look pretty!

LeoandBoosmum · 24/10/2013 20:14

No red, mustard or orange imo

SmokyHeart · 24/10/2013 20:40

Thank you. I feel a lot happier now that I will find something to wear with it!

Navy is a great idea. I have a navy jumper so I will try that with it.

I love the other colours suggested like khaki, olive and plum too. It sounds like it will go with a lot more colours than I thought :)

i'd probably pick out the blue or the brown in the tweed. And the brown leather detail would send me towards brown too (brown and pink are lovely together IMO)

it's a lovely colour.

LeoandBoosmum · 24/10/2013 21:10

I personally wouldn't pair it with orange but if you're pretty young you could get away with that, I suppose. If you want to do brights then a nice vibrant turquoise shade could look good :

I'm 38 and feel a bit past that clashing trend... :) I would say brown too (like Badgers said) but I would make sure it was a dark brown without a hint of red.
This shade of brown:

as opposed to this:

I personally think, especially for autumn/ winter, creams, navy, plums, emeralds and purples would work best :) Love the skirt, btw! :)

Oops, in my enthusiasm I forgot to make the links live...sorry!

I don't think I could get away with wearing orange with it. It would be too bright for me! Maybe on someone younger.

Badgersretreat, brown is a good idea and I hadn't thought of picking up the colour from the leather straps.

I am just a few years older than you, LeoandBoosmum. Thanks for the links. I love that turquoise colour, it's gorgeous! And I see what you mean about the shades of brown - more of a bitter chocolate colour.

I have a cream jumper that I usually wear with brown jeans, so I will try it with the skirt.

Thank you all!

Smoky If you want to be a little bit wild Grin then this green would look really nice paired with that skirt!

2 pics to give you an idea what I mean:

...along the lines of the green shades on this flower, ball of wool and label :

www.amountainofcrushedice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/geen-chartreuse.jpg

That would look pretty with brown or black boots (if the sweater covered the brown straps on the skirt).

I think a nice v or crew neck in this shade in lambswool, quite fitted but not tight... Sort of like this but a more vibrant shade of this...if YKWIM?

Or this....nice!! But £££ :(

If you feel you don't want to be so bright, this green is gorge with that shade of skirt...

Ooh, and that turquoise you liked! You need to find the sweater alternative to this...it'd be beautiful!

Oh, yes..I did mean a brown like the shade of dark chocolate! :)

Anyway, just a few more ideas! Some of these are just ridiculously priced even if they are lovely...I don't know what your budget is but it'll give you something to go on :)

SmokyHeart · 25/10/2013 18:24

Oh wow, lots of wonderful suggestions there. Thank you!

I feel encouraged to try lots of colours that I wouldn't have thought of trying :) My favourite of all of those is the last one, the turquoise cardigan - a jumper in that colour would be perfect.

Even the ones that are too £££ are worth looking at for the idea. That Peter Jensen one is gorgeous! There are some lovely shades of green there. I really like the Jaeger one too.

You make an excellent style adviser, LeoandBoosmum! I have gone from worrying about what on earth I would wear with the skirt to realizing there are lots of choices :) I can't wait for it to arrive now.

LifeofPo - definitely not sassy enough. But am encouraged by all this support to try lots of different colours :) If I pass an orange jumper in the shops, you never know, I might try it on ;)

I am!! JK Wink
Oh, and you're welcome!
I hadn't seen it before, but I was just looking on Boden's site for the Westbourne jumper - sold out....grrr - and, lo and behold, one of the images on the knitwear screen was the kilt you have with a turquoise sweater!
I had another idea for what would go with the skirt: teal!
This is a men's jumper but it's the kind of shade I mean:
www.marksandspencer.com/XS-Cashmilon-Crew-Neck-Jumper/dp/B00DGHAD88?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_125&nodeId=43543030&sr=1-125&qid=1382668300&pf_rd_r=1HH4BS19FVBX8VB79W0C&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=43543030&pf_rd_p=321381387&pf_rd_s=related-items-3&s_kwcid=AL!{ef_userid}!{ef_sid}!{creative}!{matchtype}!{placement}!{network}!{adwords_producttargetid}!{keyword}

Here is a better example:

misspatina.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/MG_2529-1.jpg

AND, I'm not sure what kind of colour you'd call this? Aquamarine? Greeny blue? But if you could get a knit in this shade it would look gorgeous too!

lh6.googleusercontent.com/-6Zdw9_3zYg0/UafkFhmIQOI/AAAAAAAAGCA/SiizRGrnlv4/s640/Sinful%2520Colors%2520Gorgeous.jpg

There is so much you can pair with that skirt!! It is very good buy...! Will copy this to the thread so I can activate the links! :)

SmokyHeart · 25/10/2013 19:19

Nice ideas! Wow, amazing shade for nail polish.
I especially like the misspatina one.

It's neat you found a photo of it on the Boden website, for some reason I hadn't seen that. I did notice somewhere else they have paired orange with bright pink though ...

I quite like the look of this www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Knitwear/Jumpers/WK903-EMD/Womens-Emerald-Mixed-Stitch-Jumper.html or www.boden.co.uk/en-GB/Womens-Knitwear/Jumpers/WK894-TUR/Womens-Turquoise-Cable-Jumper.html (similar styling to the misspatina one but not the same shade)... could be worth a try?

OP posts:
LeoandBoosmum · 25/10/2013 19:50

:)
I like that first one! Not so sure about the second one - I tried that in emerald green - or v similar - a couple of years back and even though I'm a small ten it made me look much bigger, not flattering... :(
Hmm...I don't know. I think if you are young and have black hair and an olive-y complexion OR very blonde hair with a pale, flawless complexion, orange could look good...otherwise, I'd vote no.
I think the Miss Patina one is still available, about £40 IIRC...it is oversized though and I think a more fitted style would complement that skirt more :)

SmokyHeart · 25/10/2013 20:06

I have a pale complexion but sadly not flawless! However those lovely teal, chartreuse, turquoise shades you thought of will suit me.

I think you're right about it needing to be fitted. I'll scrub the Boden ideas. Thanks again!
