If I cut off the feet of DD's wooly tights ..

... do I need to hem around the ends in some way?
DD has some beautiful multi-coloured tights, which are now too small. I could cut off the feet and make them into leggings. Is there some finishing off I need to do to prevent fraying?

You would def need to turn them up twice on the inside and hem round either with a stretch stitch or a normal zigzag. If you don't have a sewing machine you could use elastic thread maybe? I am not sure whether they might go a bit saggy around the bottoms though.

Worth a try perhaps though ... Thanks.

Do you have a sewing machine? I think it's a great idea, found this link which might help Smile

If it's a fine knit, it'll probably be OK not to hem them.

I snip the ends off my merino & fine cotton tights all the time & they just roll up a tiny bit like the edge of an un-hemmed t-shirt. Something like thick ribbed cotton tights I would hesitate over, but I still wouldn't expect them to unravel drastically. Just maybe put them in a mesh bag when you machine wash.

Tip: don't cut off at the ankle (unless you have to e.g. if they have a formed heel shape), snip off at the toes instead. That way you get more length, & will be able to check for any possible unravelling.

Hemming would be a real faff - though not impossible if you like sewing - & you might end up with the openings too tight unless you are careful & use a stretch stitch as described above.

PS that's a great link above, it does look a bit nicer to have them finished if they are on show. Mine are usually hidden inside boots Grin

Great link and ideas .... will definitely be trying different ways of using these tights.
