Sali Hughes and her 8 cod liver capsules a day...

She recommends taking cod liver oil as an antidote to ageing, see [http://www.theguardian.com/fashion/2013/jul/20/anti-ageing-treatments-sali-hughes here]. I take cod liver oil when I remember and also eat oily fish at least once a week, and like to think it improves the quality of my skin - but 8 capsules a day?!

Who takes cod liver supplements and do you feel it has any benefit?

I take cod liver oil, not for anti aging though but because I have bad joints due to a medical condition and I find they help keep me a little more flexible. Couldn't say about the anti aging properties though

I thought you had to be careful with cod liver oil because of the vitamin A? I suppose it depends how big her capsules are.

I've always been told that too much cod liver oil can be harmful because of vitamin A and D. Taking 8 1000mg tablets every day seems excessive to me.

She must have guts of steel.

I take one a day. Best brands are Lamberts/Nature's Best - no fishy burps with those!

UsedToBeNDP · 21/10/2013 19:07

Both she & Caroline Hirons "recommend it" although I wonder about how beneficial it is or if it's a load of crap and just the latest fad (or indeed damaging to health).

JoanRanger · 21/10/2013 20:36

Some people called her out on that in the comments and she said she doesn't take more than the RDA. So, er, presumably takes lots of tiny doses of it?

LeoandBoosmum · 21/10/2013 20:40

More likely to get vitamin A toxicity! Cod liver oil is best avoided! Salmon oil is good!

Fuckitthatlldo · 21/10/2013 20:44

If it's the vitamin A she's trying to utilise for anti-ageing, she's much better off using a topical retinoid.

As for dietary supplements, I really don't think they're necessary if one eats a decent, varied diet in the first place.
