Is it possible to wear a gilet/body warmer without looking like a barrel?

I want a gilet, but I don't want to look like a barrel. I am Nigella shaped, so without a waist, I just look like a porker. Is it possible to get gilets that have some shape to them & don't just make you look round & quilted?

Not really - but I don't care as I hate being cold.

I have one (my favourite one) that I bought from M&Co a couple of years ago. It is vertically darted on the front panels, thus pulling it in slightly and giving it an subtle A-line shape.

Only if you are a size 12 or under and 5'6" or over ie. DD1 can and I can't

I've tried on loads and I always look silly.

Joules ones are very very flattering

Nicknamegrief · 17/10/2013 15:50

Busty lady here and another vote for Joules.

The thing is I look like mitcheline man in a big warm coat anyway, so at least its just the gilet bit that looks round in a gilet!

InTheFace · 17/10/2013 15:55

If you're Nigella shaped I would stay away, unless it's really skinny material (think Barbour rather than North Face) and fitted around the middle.

Whatever you do, don't get anything with fur. No matter how amazing your figure, if you are over 16 you WILL look like a mad bag lady.

" I am Nigella shaped, so without a waist,"

Nigella has a very defined waist.

Homeiswherethefartis · 17/10/2013 18:13

TBH no one and I mean absolutely no one actually looks good a gilet but they do keep you nice and toasty. Its a choice of comfort over style.

Bunbaker · 17/10/2013 18:15

I agree that gilets are not flattering.
I am never toasty unless my arms are covered. that is why I think gilets and warm clothes with three quarter length sleeves are rather pointless.

nbee84 · 17/10/2013 18:19

Bunbaker - misplaced comma I think. Should say "I am Nigella shaped, so without a waist I just look like a porker."

Shlurpbop · 17/10/2013 18:22

I've just packed mine up ready for the charity shop - I've had it 3 years and worn it every year, but looked in the mirror today and thought 'argh that looks bloody awful!

Bunbaker · 17/10/2013 18:33

Oops. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

eggyhead · 17/10/2013 18:41

5' 4" here and size 10 to 12. I don't think I look like a barrel!

I have five in various colours...

Unzipped with a scarf is slimming...

Try sainsburys. They appear to have lifted this entire collection from Joules (nearly had to check which shop I was in) Grin
The gilet in navy or olive green (I think) has a checked lining, and at the side two tab things with press studs so you can nip the waist in
